This is an original design of mine. Some sort of orbital fighter inspired by the Tigershark from Wing Commander Prophecy and of course in orbital black and white like the Shuttle.

I'm hoping to figure out texture painting in blender to do decals or at least brush up on texture skills. Also, would like to figure out an easy way to animate RCS firing while maneuvering.

It's got hatches for radiators and air intakes for atmospheric flight, but I'll have to design some wings

    Interesting!
Funnily, shortly before you posted this I had watched something with a similar shape. It's reminiscent of the spaceship in the 90's Fantastic Four cartoon, when they show their origin story.

You might want to look at this for painting
    https://ucupumar.github.io/ucupaint-wiki/

Or, you can do my decal trick - which is to copy just the polys you want the decal to be on, into a separate mesh, then apply your decal shader (with an alpha) onto that little mesh piece.

I long for projection decal materials like Vray and Unreal to come to Blender...

I found a couple neat addons DECALMachine (which I haven't tried because of the price) and there's similar functionality in the Sanctus Library addon, which is what I used for the decals. Blender's texture paint I don't think suits my purposes in this case, but it was neat to try.

You are channeling your Chris Foss with the Vaygr designs. ( good thing! )

I was playing around with japetus's awesome Kronos One, and added a procedural grunge pass to the hull shaders.
Well I got the bug to build my own, and I'm planning to add some details based on Bill Krause's D7-7 IKS Vondor

I love the variety in your work. I can tell that different things call to you, and you start making models when they do.

That's gorgeous and that car paint material is drool worthy. Your glass material is on point too.

Thanks! I enjoy working with shaders.

The glass is a glass shader with a slight green tint and a low roughness mixed with a glossy shader set to zero roughness, and a layer weight node fresnel in the factor of the mix node.

The paint is a bit more involved. There's a voronoi for the flake sparkles used in the clearcoat normal, a noise texture for the orange peel, I think I used two principled bsdf shaders with a fresnel layer weight, one with a black base color. The color comes from the clearcoat I think.

OK, here's a close-up view of my car paint shader.
    Download the .blend here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AqLmuGgJAtV619wqOmu_6hJUNaZ6sA?e=efobVe

    ay2wma5lgvn4.png

It's constructed similar to how real paint is laid down with a metallic first layer and a tinted clear coat.
The voronoi plugged into the normal slot makes the metal flake sparkles, and the clearcoat provides the color.
I also added some noise into the clearcoat roughness so it has some dull spots which I think looks better than pristine shiny paint. Maybe not better, but more realistic.
