I have to admit that the whole "node" approach to surface texturing is still a bit of a mystery to me. You see demos on it and it's like everyone knows something about node texturing and how to layer them and how to join what to what and I missed the special class that makes it all obvious.
Hey I just became one of 9 people with the 2K posting badge on this forum. But then there's @evil_genius_180 who's left us all in the distant dust. I bow to you EG

Do you think Blender tutorials on Nodes cross over to Lightwave nodes well? I've always wondered if there was a universality to node texturing or if it was software specific.

Thanks though. I'll check those out.
Having messed with nodes in both programs, I find they do work very similarly. So, it's possible, but there of course will be some conversion.
I don't know why, but I find the render where it looks like a toy very satisfying.
Yeah! It gave me an excuse to make the cutting mat procedural shader. Still no image textures! (except the porsche logos and the desk and lamp from Blenderkit)
Yeah, I try to avoid image textures too. Fortunately, that's pretty easy since Blender has such a robust toolkit. I've barely even scratched the surface of what you can do with procedurals, where you've definitely gone much deeper into that. But, I also only look up how to do something on an as needed basis.
One of the best CGI shots I've ever seen was when the Battlestar dropped into the atmosphere of a planet with the Cylons, flaming all the way, launched vipers and then FTL jumped away, leaving swirling smoke. My son and I went nuts over that one. It was just such a great story idea.

Yeah, for sure. Battlestar had great CGI in general. In fact, the series won three Primetime Emmy awards, two were for special effects in 2007 and 2008, and they were nominated for a whole lot more, including special effects in 2006 and 2009. If you go to IMDB and take a look at the list of CG artists and supervisors, I bet you'll see a lot of familiar names.
It honestly makes me wonder sometimes where a lot of big budget big screen movies go wrong when a Sci-Fi Channel (back when it was spelled correctly) series from almost 20 years ago has better VFX than a lot of them do.
I'm sure Galactica thought out its use of VFX early on. They knew which episodes were going to have the BIG moments, and what they would demand, so they were able to give the artists time to get it right. That's usually what it comes down to. The Avatar movies use the same vendors as a bunch of other movies, the difference is they get the time to get it right (yes, there are other factors involved, but time and prep makes a massive difference).

I would love to see more of this with the Refit Secondary hull!

Agreed!
