FINALLY finished the gold bits, especially on the bottom where it was kind of unclear...

    Amazing work japetus.

Very nice work, so well detailed. I assume that the slightly woolly glow on the impulse engines are a placeholder? Other than that detail this is looking absolutely gorgeous, and this is from someone who prefers his Klingon Cruisers the traditional old fashioned way without all this bling.

    ;)

Not sure what you mean by "woolly" :) but I do intend to tweak the impulse engine colors a bit. Plus I have tonadd glow at the end anyway. I funk now that the texturing is pretty mic done, aside from the odd cleanup here and there I was going to experiment a little with klingon interiors. Not too many windows so it shouldn't be too bad!

I guess I mean a little ill defined? It looks a bit patchy looking with the red in the middle and blotchy areas of orange coming in from the edges. Isn't the impulse engine colour on this puppy generally pretty solid red? Though I imagine if you get in nice and tight there'd be some form of grid or matrix in there to make it more visually interesting.

Either way, looking forward to seeing what you come up with for it, as this model is starting to look pretty stunning.

The ting went from some white plastic for a diffuse light to some natty gels to what appears to be red transparent taillight material or a small pattern for a light diffuser (used in the defiant deflector). I think it is just resin someone poured onto some pattern. Anyhow in the last iteration of this ship the Quonos/Kronos One/1 it had this lighter stuff that was visible through the plastic and created a mottled look. In the movie it was a red to orange blobbyish look.

It's a shame that all that detail didn't resolve well on screen, at least when they scanned the film for blu-ray... some people actually hope they redo the movies like TNG, just recompositing the effects... heck, might even improve ST5... :p

Thanks MadKoi and people, yes, this pic (http://imageshack.us/a/img833/8762/shipbutt.png) is the one I was trying to match. I do have the diamond shaped piece over the impulse engine as can be seen in the photographs, but it's not showing up for some reason. I'll work on it a bit more. I'm sure with some glow and futzing it'll look pretty sweet!

I agree, she is all washed out and nasty greenish looking. Yet again they did some heavy color correction. I don't know if it was because of a by-product of optical compositing or just a desire to change the colors, but the coloring is quite differnt:

Wow, and I'm noticing how different the cropping is too:

I stand corrected, orangey it is. Perhaps the original version from ST:TMP was colour corrected to be more red or something? Either way I.m sure you'll do a good job of matching the movie version.

From the pictures posted by MKF it looks a lot like someone just cut some bicycle reflectors to shape and removed the reflective backing so that a light would shine through. Maybe it's worth thinking of it that way for lighting/texturing?

Either way, looking very nicely modelled and painted.
"Perfect. Then that's the way it shall be."

Increased the diamond shaping and adjusted the material. A little too rflective maybe but closer I think.

That is looking pretty awesome, and not just thanks to the improvements to the impulse engines, the detailing of that entire area is off the charts. That is looking much better to me, but yes you're right, perhaps tone the reflectivity down a notch and then kick up the glow effect some.

Here's a couple little test animations I made... chekcing glow tests and running light blink tests along with general quality of everything and the lighting. Turned out good i think!

Dang it, so pushy!! :) That'd be cool..some people here have done some really nice photon effects. What do they use, the Optical Flares plugin?

Edit: Would also be a good use for my Ent-B!

I find this youtube generated thumbnail to be pretty hilarious looking. I got the message that "we can help you with your lighting!" I'm assuming this horrid thumbnail is what it could have looked like...

Haha, that thumbnail stuff is precisely why I've begun uploading my own thumbnails, via the "Custom Thumbnails" option. :)

That looks great, however, in that second shot where we're looking directly at the ship, it seems like the beacon on one nacelle has a different key framed intensity pattern than the other... one nacelle it's flashing like it goes from, for example, 0,25,50,25,0... but the other seems like it goes 0,50,50,50,0... unless it's just me...

Its supposedly there, I'm using rsm blur in nuke, Ill try turning it up. I'm going to slow that motion down anyway though to give it a greater sense of scale.
