    Thank you, spacefighter.

Added the hanger bay and some innards.

That's looking really cool so far. I love the open framework with the exposed innards.

    Thanks evil_genius_180.

Added large hull plates and some color.

Looking good. I like the paneling and color choices. :)

Worked a lot on a big cannon. Guns take me a long time.

I decided to reduce the length of the main hull, so I had to do a lot of slicing and dicing. I still have a bit of repair to do on the hull plating.

Beefed up the support frame, added a few things that are hard to see from this angle, and started figuring out the drive unit.

That looks good. I can't wait to see what you do with the drive unit. It looked wild in your sketch. :)
  • rojrenrojren2425 Louisville, Kentucky USAPosts: 1,995Member
Worked on the drive unit. The purple sphere is the reaction containment zone. It's there just because.

Spent some time making different frame systems for the drive accelerator coils. I dislike this one less than the others.

I think this works a little better.

i like the spindly effect of parts of this ship but the way the drive unit hangs from the tail just seems a bit "wrong". many of the details are nice especially in the coil bits between the engine bell and the "microsingularity(?)" frame but i think something closer in shape to your original "citadel" design but with a second support arm on the underside may have been better.
  • rojrenrojren2425 Louisville, Kentucky USAPosts: 1,995Member
One of the things with this ship and the Citadel is I wondered why have a sci-fi ship reactor that's mostly a large bulky thing with force fields inside. Why not just have the force field bubble as the reactor?

I seem to remember this being inspired by something from a 1980's Heavy Metal magazine as well as wanting a much smaller sibling of Citadel.

It looks good, but I think it seems a bit odd to have your drive unit "hanging" off of the back.
  • rojrenrojren2425 Louisville, Kentucky USAPosts: 1,995Member
I like "odd". And I think it makes as much sense as putting engines on a couple of sticks as far from the center axis as possible.
    **cough**Star Trek**cough**

I wanted this ship to be one of those things that was nothing but design problems. "This won't work... so we'll change this, and that to allow for it... but that causes interference with something else... and we can't get these parts any more, so we'll have to splice this in instead... and the CEO wants one of these included, even though it causes major conflicts, because he made a deal with some Senator whose district they're made in... etc."

Of course that doesn't happen in real life.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with odd, or doing your own thing. At least nobody can claim you're copying. ;) Plus, these are "derelict" ships, nobody said they all work. I like the idea of it possibly being a problem design. That's probably why it's a derelict.

Technically, the engine is inside the ship. Those are just used to regulate the reaction and create a warp bubble around the ship, allowing it to propel itself at faster than light speeds. ;) The difference being that they don't generate thrust, like yours does.

That's pretty wild. In a good way, of course. It looks cool so far. The last one came out great. :D

Changed the color, and filleted a helluva bunch of edges.

Looks like my computer case fans...:D

Seriously, that's pretty cool, but I think I preferred the original color. Only reason I say that is because the current coloring looks a lot like that used on a couple of your previous ships.

Well, blast it. It does look like a fan.
Time for a re-think. Maybe more hexagons?
I'll look for a different color too.

Rather than re-think the whole thing, try to work with it. I *like* the design, and it's different from what one usually sees.

Hell, when I see the bad guy's ship in Battle Beyond the Stars, I think of shredded wheat cereal. It's difficult to come up with something so completely original that there's no way anyone couldn't compare it to anything.

The Honorverse ships get compared to sex toys and the Discovery from 2001 was likened to a spermatozoa (of course, the Star Child didn't exactly refute that comparison, did it?).

You could try adding more rows of blades and off-set their rotation, that would kill the fan look.
  • rojrenrojren2425 Louisville, Kentucky USAPosts: 1,995Member
New color. Added hexes. The black background is how it looks while I work on it, and it shows off the transparency better.
