No, this one is really huge. The ring is about 70 meters in diameter, and the whole ship will be somwhere around 500 meters long. The over all shape is heavily inspired by the battleship from "Blue Drop", so it will be somewhat too aerodynamic and top-oriented for actual space vessel. As an excuse for such design, I`ve desided that this ship should be able to function and remain in control in the upper atmospheric layers, to perform extreme aerobraking maneuvers, or simply, to scoop gases for use as a propellant.
Hey im in google HQ been with the sketchup team for the last week got some pretty cool stuff going on, just released version 8 the new tools will really help plus there are some great new toolsets and plugins that are pretty amazing!
Ill be writing up some new tutorials and info about all the new features of SU here when I get back to the UK on monday!
Good work by the way!
I would get it just for the boolean tools. I have been using V8 for over a month now and I have seen no major current bugs? Make sure you get sub/smooth V2.0 when it comes out will help us both a lot with are smoothing and subdivision.
I don`t care much about boolean tools (never used them, any way ) However smoothing and subdivisioning sounds promissing. Could help a lot in building of "organic" shapes. By the way, any advancements in the texturing tools in V8 ?
Menwhile, an update on the battleship model.
Note: a most of shapes are not intersected yet, so, there are a lot of "junk" surfaces.
For those, who asked for dimensions Thrusters are just hanging there - no engine covers or shadow shields yet. Gravity rings are 68 meters in diameter, and are a placeholder for now - no details inside the ring for now, I`ve just cleaned and intersected rear part of the model.
I like it so far, but it doesn't look very VIR-esque... The shape looks too complicated to me for a designer in his right mind could think it will surf on upper atmosphere... time will tell if i will be a huge fan of this one too, or not
I know, that it stands out, and I`ve said before that it is overly aerodynamic for an average VIA-verse ship. The shape is complicated, but the ship is HUGE, and most hull parts have independant aerodynamic patterns, instead of one global aerodynamic lifting hull. Of course, in reality such hull will be torn apart by the drag of re-entry... But that could be said for all VIA-verse ships, apart from early Soviet ones.
Actually, it is modeled very closely after the "Blue" battleship from anime "Blue Drop" (not too god of an anime, but extremely good scenes featuring battleships). I`m just adapting the shape for my needs, since I like the original design a lot. It is not an exact copy, since supposed technological levels are very different, but I`m truying to keep that "whale" feeling that initial battleship inspires.
Uhm. I think that everywhere ships and veichles of the same faction, has got the same design, not because the designers are lazy but cause that veichles are supposed to have the same technology and stuffs and to had been created by the same scientist/engeneers ects..
This is really different form your previous design, a part from where you took the inspiration or what it is supposed to do [you know, the last thing I care about is the realism XD ], I think you should add detalies and edit the shape a little bit to make it as close as possible to the others RE ships [that were exellent].
Or, or, you could say it's the last generation of RE ships, just came out from the dry dock. Not only the design seems to say this: all the "citadel" seems modern compared to your previous ships, especually the sensor towers.
Blue and light blue are linked to high energy and high tecnology.
P.S.
Anyway, your design is really better than the original one.
Well, you really hit the nail on it`s head. Because it IS the "next generation" ship. Actually, if you compare Moscow class destroyer and battlefrigate - those ships are also quite different in design. This happens because, unlike fighters, capital ships have very long service life (Moscow class is in service for several HUNDREDS of years allready) and ships of different generations have good chance of serving together. In our case, RE`s military use several 1st generation ships (Moscow class destroyers and numerous refitted corvettes), (relatively) large number of 2nd generation ships (Malachite - class frigate and Stremitel`niy-class Battlefrigate, strike carriers and several 1st generation battlefrigates refitted as escort carriers) and now, the 3rd generation ship is completed, to replace the Moscow-class. Naturaly, its the pinnacle of technology, much like Moscow-class was during its development time.
There are just two ships in existance - one is fully functional prototype, performing field tests, and the second is in dry docks yet under construction.
Towers are basicly just an illumination. Since there is no way to hide in space - such illuminated elements are great to show the scale of this leviathan. Violet lights on the core section are the parasitic lights of the ultra-violet cooling lasers. Yep, the ship is so power-packed that it require such cooling system in addition to the "conventional" radiators, located in the "fins".
P.S.
I doubt that my design is better then original. It`s just different. An image of sentient battleship jumping out of the ocean waves like some sort of collossal whale is damned psychodelic and catch the eye for sure.
-An image of sentient battleship jumping out of the ocean waves like some sort of collossal whale...
Find and take a look at Blue Submarine #6.
The CG is quite poor compared to todays performance but think that it has been the first Anime with combat scenes totally made in CG [and not just animated].
Just 4 episodes, well it's more like a movie.. but it's great.
Had to pause modelling of the battleship, to sketch it`s integral weapon system. Otherwise, the problems with fitting one shape into another could arise from nowhere.
Here`s the rough concept. Its an unmanned short-range aerospace fighter-interceptor. Normally, they are used as "wingmans" for a piloted fighters or as remote point-defence for a battleship, for interception of incoming missiles or fghters. The drone is very agile, and can achieve enormous acceleration, but its propellant and coolant reserves are extremely short. In addition, it`s onboard AI is quite simplistic (cheapness requirements) and not suited for complicated missions. MiG`s "Skat" and "Ghost" drones from "Macross" were the main sourses of inspiration.
Moscow-class is a "destroyer" And no, those drones were space-only. Sort of reusable FTL-missiles. This ones will be used on the battleship and (most likely) on carriers, after refit.
Updated drone. Over all shape is finished, all what is left - is a detalisation and clean-up of the model (to intersect parts and deleter unnecessary elements)

That`s from Blue Drop. Origin of the battleship`s design.
I'm waiting for updates ^^ work work work!
You know you're so fast that your updates are becoming a regular appointment like a tv show:
I.g.(.'s Day planning:
-7:30 watch Farscape.
-8:20 check Stonecold's latest design.
-9:40 watch Babylon 5.
-11:30...
