    this one?

    Strange.

The most recent one I've seen over there was the one
    1. built by Prologic9 http://www.foundation3d.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3875
    2. then modified by EremiticWolf http://www.foundation3d.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6772 to become the "All Good Things" abomination and
    3. afterwards textured by PolyGone http://www.foundation3d.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9146

And prior to that there was a new thread with Dave's (IRML) Galaxy http://www.foundation3d.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7608 and I doubt his opinion on going beyond controlled releases has changed since the last time he spoke on the topic.

My advice to you is to visit the Downloads > Meshes > Science Fiction > Ships > Star Trek section. Surprises will doubtless follow :)

Considering there's only Prologic9's initial release and the mentioned variations of that model there's not much of a surprise.

That's what post #1254 was all about.

    @homer: yes, that'd be it.

@lennier: the original Galaxy that he released wasn't exactly a stunner (completely untextured), but the one I just saw is a lot better by comparison. The point is, it wasn't there the last few times I strolled through the Star Trek ships section. Therefore, it's new to me. And it qualifies as a surprise because it's a (big) step up from the Fitzgerald I was using.

That's why it usually helps to read (you even quoted my explanation when replying).

Here's the relevant post from Prologic9's WIP thread at that time:
Well, I was thinking the other day about my recent work in the last year or so. I always find myself wanting to do more and more and it's all in a perpetual state of unfinshedness.

The -D for example, as it exists there's just no motivation for me to complete the model because it, to me, is just not accurate. It's just one of those things where you have to build it in order to learn the model and what not. As it is I like to think of the WIP in this thread as a first draft.

And then it occurred to me how because of my personal expectations I don't get to share my work as much as I'd like to.

So, thinking it over, I've decided to do something I wouldn't normally do, and release the model as it stands. I've put together a rather basic Lightwave port, and though there are virtually no textures, I think in this case the physical detail is enough to make a decent render.

    I've submitted the file so it should be available shorty, there's a very important readme included with this one so be sure to take a look. Here's a sample of the Lightwave mesh;

Excuse me, sir, but I did read. I was in a bit of a hurry when I did so and I misunderstood what you were trying to say.

And I wouldn't accept anything of IRML's if he paid me hefty promotional fees to incorporate his materials.

Considering his Galaxy is a regular in the SotL calendar he already has the promotional exposure he needs. And with a choice of words like that you're only doing yourself a disservice.

@batboy853: sorry, but...no :) (Took me a few minutes to even realize you were talking about Sponebob Queerpants there)

spongebob squarepants is gay? i did not know....

but thats excelent news that you found a better model i tried that one out and didnt really like it myself, i've always been a fan of dj curtis's model, while its meant for the bridge commander game, it still looks phenomenal when rendered properly...
You may know of me as AndyP elsewhere...

@batboy: in fairness the original by Prologic was a bland offering, as you could see during the launch sequence there really wasn't much there. The textured version on the other hand is terrific, I'm already rendering my first animation (the ship dropping out of warp), and it looks great! Even better, the render times are phenomenal compared to the other one I've been using, so now the exterior shots won't take so long to reach you once I start working on them.

Scene 41 is coming along ponderously but reasonably well so far, I discovered there's going to be some unanticipated staging challenges to this scene so we'll see what happens. Stay tuned!

Of course, it takes time to build the vulcan arena. And to animate the combatants. See, i already know how this will end. Garr will be trying to kill Reyf. Prentice will give the captain a drug to make him think hes dead, while Garr goes through Pon Farr. its quite simple actually!

@homer: you forgot the toughest part of the scene: the infamous gong!!! :)

To make it a little easier to produce I've split 41 up into three parts, A B and C. 41A is up:

not bad. theres a problem with the sound, but i think its my headphones causing it ;)

    Next one's up:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyHUs0S4qas

I cheaped out on the animation here and I know it, so if these characters don't seem as lively all of a sudden it's a problem that's on my to-do list, but right now I'm really really eager to get to Scene 42, so I'm speeding through Scene 41 as quickly as I can. :)

I don't want to jinx it, but I'm on pace to have the rest of Scene 41 finished either tomorrow or the next day, so stay tuned!

That just leaves the last little bit on the bridge, then we launch into Scene 42, "The Black Hole / Forever."

Coming soon: Scene 43, "A Bad Time."

impressive. what happened to scene 42? (and i love the new Fitzy model!)

@homer: Scene 42 is coming soon too :) We're at another stopdown whilst I figure out the design of my time machine once and for all. I'm still coming up dry so any and all ideas are welcome!
  • tnpir4002tnpir4002418 Posts: 1,277Member
Folks, we have a winner! I've got a basic design for the time machine now (what was eluding me was a basic form factor, now that I have that everything else will fall into place), and now all I have to do is build it. I can already tell you that after Scene 41, Scene 42 is going to be made up of three things:

    -Crowning Music of Awesome
    -Technology Porn
    -Tear Jerker

This is one of several key scenes that dates back all the way to the very first draft of Specter, and as such is one of the highlights that I've been looking forward to making more than the others. I hope you guys will enjoy watching it as much as I do making it!

By popular demand, a preview for Scene 42, which will be the only one. It gives you an idea of some of what I've got planned:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGsuhT1dVT0

I'm agonizing over something though, the color of the polaron beam that Garr shoots at the black hole, the sickly green color just doesn't look as good to me as I expected it to, but I'm having a hard time settling on another color. Suggestions on the topic welcome!

dominion purple or simple phaser-goldish colour.

Love this stuff, but what's with the song at the end? Why not kill the music altogether and just have just the thrum, thrum, thrum of a warp core as the I.S.S. Voyager enters Sector 585, approaching the black hole? Garr sitting in his ready room, a single tear running down his cheek bone for all of one, maybe two seconds, as he suddenly, angrily recomposes himself, wiping the tear off with his cuff. Garr's weakening slightly but willing himself to complete his restoration of the timeline that was "meant to be", damn everything else, or sacrifice himself for the glimmer of remorse for what he's felt he's had to do in the attempt. Cut to Reyf suddenly telling Kristie's story to Troi and his X.O. as Tina Turner's cover of John Waite's "Missing You" plays out over almost the whole thing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qutvO52Too

Just an idea. Garr doesn't seem so amoral and through-and-through despicably evil as he once appeared. I actually feel a bit sorry for him in the hopes he doesn't wind-up falling on his sword to see this through. I'd personally like to know what so 100% screwed-up/pissed-off Garr, as Reyf mentioned "the arctic" + "face-off @ Reichenbach Falls".

Which if I remember correctly was the Sherlock Holmes/Moriarty showdown that "killed" Holmes in "The Adventure of The Final Problem" set in 1891, before his re-appearance in "The Adventure of The Empty House" as Holmes' brother Mycroft helps him recover from Holmes' slim escape from death at the bottom of the gorge, laying low from being detected by Moriarty's goons for a while after genuinely dispatching Moriarty himself.

Great preview...but if this scene has a Black Hole in it...it should have John Barry's "The Black Hole" Score.

how did i know you were going to make this "non genre music scene #3" when you said crowning music of awesome....

i know its your film and you'll do what ever you want, but i would take a look at the source you are citing for crowning music of awesome and take a look at the examples in the film category...

its a good film so far its just that i strongly feel that some of the random pop songs do not fit with the genre. its like they are there just to be there.

would also check out these pages too

    soundtrack dissonance
dethroning music of suck(check out the part about bioshock and 30 seconds to mars, heroes)
what do you mean its not awesome

@batboy853: if we're going to get into a trope war then you've chosen poorly :) I've been on that site for months and I know just about every one they have!

First, I've been saying for weeks this would be the third and final "20th century song montage" of the movie. You should've known this was coming. It may be a bit of genre blindness to you, but remember two things: one, that Garr is in some ways an author avatar for me, since they always say to write what you know best; second, for me as a filmmaker (dare I say it!) the song sequences are opportunities to just have fun (and let's face it, some of the best visuals yet were in Scene 28). It may be fan heresy to do what I've done and mix songs with score, but the blunt truth is there are certain things that won't work any other way. I'd rather have a good product and suffer some internet backdraft then use dialogue to carry any of these sequences (Scene 28 especially). But, as with all things, your mileage may vary. (Remember, Bill Cosby himself once remarked that you can't please everyone, and that trying to do so is a guaranteed way to fail). Since I'm not much one for complaining about complaining, I'll simply say that no matter what I do, someone's going to say "they changed it now it sucks" (or "it's the same now it sucks" as the case may be), so rather than focus on the negative, I just want to make the movie I'd want to see, and pray that I don't wind up with a broken base when it's all over. Just answer me this: do the 20th century montage sequences ruin the experience, or is it just that you don't like them? If the answer is the latter, I would ask that you at least wait until the scene is finished before you decry it, and if you want to critique it before that, please restrict your remarks to the visuals and the subject matter, rather than the choice of background music. I'll be a little more openminded to criticism of the music selection when the scene is done and posted, and we can all see it together.

(if it makes you feel any better, Scene 42 was originally meant to be accompanied by "Beamed to the Farm," from the Caretaker soundtrack)

EDIT: @homer: TV Tropes Are Not Bad! Even if they do horrible things to your vocabulary, they will definitely enhance your life. Besides, that I invoked that many shouldn't surprise you--Specter does have its own Tropes page, and I had to get that list somehow! No one can say I didn't do the research :)
