I think doing original work is way more stressful than doing derivative work. I mean, you're trying to come up with unique designs that someone isn't immediately going to look at and go "hey, that looks like...." You definitely have a knack for originality.

This is a new warship named Nuija. It's mostly placeholders so far.

Nuija is Finnish for club (as in a heavy stick you hit things with), so warship seems appropriate

Comco: i entered it manually in the back end

I've gone back and forth on this a lot. I had a lot done on the weapons pods (the things on the sides) and then deleted it all.

My first impression of this is that of a giant battering ram. Probably not what you had in mind, but I can picture that circular structure in front projecting a force field that smashes through an enemy hull! Also fits with Guerrilla's definition of the ships name.

No, that's the back end of the ship - the drive unit, specifically. The thing sort of floating there will be a weapons pod.

Oh, I see. Many of your designs seem to have the round, blunt end facing towards the front.

    I like the blueish shades.

Those are some really nice details. Plus, you know I love those glows and the way they light up the ship.

Yeah, don't know how you do it.

    Thanks, all.

@evil_genius_180 Speaking of the lights, one weird thing about AutoCAD is it seems to clone it's lights. Where there was one light source at x brightness, suddenly there's 3, each at x brightness. I'm sure it's a feature.

@Brandenberg Do what? Lights? I don't know how it works in other programs, but in AutoCAD I sort of hang light bulbs where I want them - and hope they don't replicate.

I tried adding more weapons pods. Not entirely sure about where I'm going.

You say that a lot, but you always manage to find your destination! :)

    Cool stuff.

I was again referring to your completely original designs. Sorry that was so vague. I said it because in the beginning I thought "What the heck is he going to do with this?" Now I see. It's very cool.

Impressive as always. But not sure about the second pair of weapons pods. Right now they seam redundant to me even though the additional structure favours your design. I would like to see another angle where I could see how the pods attach to the ship. Might appear totally different then.

Added a couple of cannon and fixed some stuff that got weird.

    build0817a-thumb.png

You can see the weapons pods aren't really connected yet - just the support structure stuck through the hull.

I've been thinking about "how I do it". I usually start with a sketch or scribble. I have a folder full (well, not as full as it was) of scans of decades-old paper scraps. I'm looking for shapes that catch my eye. That's usually where I start.

For a smaller number of the designs I start with a thought of "I've never seen this idea for... say an fanciful / organic looking space station. What would it look like? "

I avoid rectilinear shapes. I really like complex curves, although keeping them aligned sucks.

And there's more than a few designs that are 'happy accidents' where a command gives me an unexpected result that I really like.

Yes that's pretty cool. I wish my creative mind would work a bit more like yours. Since I have a similar approach to my redesigns - even though they are from predefined universes - only that I run out of steam pretty quickly. If I try out an idea there are just occasionally following new ones after it.

As for the weapons pods it is like I expected and my previous impression was only due to perspective. In your last image they look like they actually belong there.

The bigger your gun, the lower your self-esteem.
Wonder what those aliens had to compensate. :)

I could see the Green Lantern Corps using this for a ride.

Low esteem or not, these guys are gonna have a lot of guns - and missile launchers.

All I know of Green Lantern is there was a movie with Ryan Reynolds that he seems less than happy with.

The front end is going to change. It's too art deco-y.

Uh, first time I realize that the ship itself looks like a gun. I like that.
Serious question, can anything look too art deco-y?
    StarCruiser
  • rojrenrojren2621 Louisville, Kentucky USAPosts: 2,015Member
Okay. That's a fair point. Let's say the rest of the rest of the ship isn't art deco-y enough to match the current front end.

Since I don't know what to do, I'm doing the "mirroring an existing part and editing it" ploy. I'll be moving the weapons pods around some more.
