AND NOW!!! the Oppie in the dock... changed locations to Utopia Planitia over Mars!! still working on workbee's etc..... so nothing busy..YET!

gonna see if I can render out an animation (GASP!) of the Oppie in the dock, somethink like a fly over/by this weekend and see what i can do with it.. nothing special

    Pictures!! And Thanks!!

This is great work my friend love the way everything is set wow

On your Oppenheimer, you might want to consider making two sets of impulse engine textures: on and off. When they're off, what you have right now looks fairly flat, but when they're on they'll look fine. Consider just a set of grays that have none of the red or yellow on them. That would probably make it look like they're off.

    Thanks guys/girls!

    Locke, yeah... next time :)

done an animation of a dock pass... AND! need more frames... i'll render out the same pass at 300 frames instead of 150 next time!!! maybe more.. need it to go Slowly!! owell..

Made the planet in aftereffects... egh... not to bad..do it in maya next time!!

So another animation of the dock... AND.. Epic Fail again!! something funky happened with the camera, it starts out slow, then speeds up to the end.. i think i know whats going on, animation curve somewhere....but, can't fix it for this pass... Owell

watch if you wish! lengthed it to 15 seconds, and stoped the suicide spin of Mars!!

and a new build! .. been interested in the Best of Both Worlds graveyard scene, built the Cheyenne and all, but as with the little scene ships.. .. and other builds.. instead of asking others to build it how I want it.. I might as well Build it myself as I want it so this is my, i guess second step, on the BoBW ships.. and since most are just kit bashes, i would just have to make some parts and throw them together for the rest.. so a chance of more ships from it.. just not right now.. have a back log of First contact ships (sans Akira.. saving that for last!) and the ambassador.. so for the foreseeable future.. finishing off the others, and starting on this one when I feel like it!

So! the USS Checkov! , Springfield class! (may not call it the checkov... don't know) .. some basics done.. saucer , warp naccelles brought over from the cheyenne ( same markers used in the model) and the delfector pod..

Going to make this ship modular, with hookups for the lower pod, and upper pod, while without either pod, i'm thinking of this ship as a fast courier or esscort.. upper pod has the shuttle bay, and is most intergrated, similar to the nebula class with the larger array/pod. and the lower pod will have connections for turbolifts and jefferys tubes ( no weird oberth/reliant shenanegans on the weapons/sensor pod and how you get there!) and is used as the sensor pod/main defflector..

thinking this ship was a test bed for the nebula in the modular design and mission specific pod/modules so to me 5-10 years older than the galaxy/nebula class, and usuall missions of short range exploration, federation border patrols, high speed couriers.. basic medium class missions, with mission specific modules, or no modules for couriers..

work on this off and on.. i'll be working on it tonight to get it to a good modeled stoping point, then i'll get back to the ambassador!

    Thanks all!

I never cared for the rest of the BoBW ships, other than Cheyenne. But I look forward to seeing if you can do something exciting with this one!
  • VALKYRIE013VALKYRIE013547 Posts: 1,473Member
okay, got some work done tonight..

first, got the sensor/deflector pod done and smoothed, Second, got the engineering section and naccelle pylon done and smoothed, transfered over the complete naccelles from the cheyenne. and built the bridge, and b/c decks.. took it right off the galaxy class minus the square turboshaft for the battle bridge. ( don't think we'll need it!)

next up is the upper pod/module, and might rebuild the saucer.. bit to segmented for my taste!

might put a small shuttle bay in the eng warp cutout, or might put an elevator type bay behind the bridge.. needs one for when the upper pod (which has a large shuttle bay) is left behind.. and find somewhere for a secondary deflector for when the lower pod/module isn't attached..

more work latter ( maybe tommorow.. )!

Nice ridged effect on the nacelle glow tubes. How do you get the ridges to match the curve so well?
  • VALKYRIE013VALKYRIE013547 Posts: 1,473Member
take a square, have 8-10 segments in the square, extrude out every other face, then boolean from the cutout.. i'll do a tut on it tomorow.. just a few booleans in a row.. :)

    Tutorial time!

Warp grill cutout tutorial (by request)

this is just the usuall way i do it, I have other ways incase mesh errors are to extreme, or boolean takes a crap...and doesn't want to work..

    Enjoy!

So you're saying that the grill is actually square, not rounded? Thanks for the tutorial.
  • VALKYRIE013VALKYRIE013547 Posts: 1,473Member
the grill IS rounded.. in that it follows the curve of the original piece.. it is square in that it has square edges.. when cutting out the space for the grill via booleans, you do it twice, once to cut it out, another to get the cut out part to use with the cube.. then you Boolean the cube and the cutout u made when you booleaned it..

the only time u use the square cutout is when u cut the shape out of the naccelle

hope that helps, i'll update the tut tobetter explain it!

    EDIT: updated
  • JennyJenny2 Posts: 0Member
Thanks, I understand... the individual elements of the grill are square-edged, even though the overall grill is rounded to follow the curve of the nacelle.

Well more work done, added a small shuttle bay in the warp cutout, just big enough for a couple type 9 shuttles, or couple shuttle pods. Now going to add a much larger shuttle bay in the top pod, big enough for a couple danube class shuttles.. or atleast should be.. thinking of the bay itself is modular with X amount of space and 10 differnet ways to utilize the space.. large bay, medium bay with cargo bays in the rear etc. so maybe it does re supply missions for various outposts/starbases.. couple new danubes for the base, parts etc. that are outside regular supply routes and ships..

done the nav deflector in the pod.. redone the saucer, more segments.. smoothed out the top pod, and added the neck for it.. The references i have for it show some wierd curvy neck thing.. but the only Real Reference shot is a blurry shot from BoBW .. and some conjecture.. owell, a guy that done a model of her had a neck similar to the nebula, straight.. so going with that for now, as i'm thinking the springfield was a test bed for the nebula class anyways..

more latter, and i'll be going back to the ambassador next week, maybe this weekend and finish her up!

    Thanks all!

This is neat. You don't often see the Springfield class modeled. It's one of the more obsqure cannon classes out there. I hadn't realized how much like a Nebula class she was. You're really doing her justice, too. She's a good-looking class, though I wish she didn't have those doofy supports running from the secondary hull to the underside of the saucer.

I really, really like the collectors on the front of your nacelles. Would you mind too much if I shamelessly replicated them for my Cheyenne nacelles?

Maybe with that pod on her back she could be a Freighter/ Tanker? We don't see those too often, but Starfleet has a bunch of them, according to the TNG Tech Manual.

Anyway, loving the progress, keep it up...

steal....erm....i mean replicate away! :) its what i have on my chyenne as well.. one of my better bussards...

Thats the feeling when i look at her is a testbed for the nebula and all her pods.. so to me, yeah.. some ships would be fast tankers/frighters that maybe go to outskirt places.. or less peacefull places that regular supply ships wouldn't go unless escorted..

and i have a support that links the eng and deflector pod.. so a turboshaft can go between.. one thing that just bothers the heck out of me with the oberth... so the structs are just extra support i guess
  • VALKYRIE013VALKYRIE013547 Posts: 1,473Member
some work done, sensor strip on the saucer, and RCS on the saucer as well, started on a spine for the eng hull.. not to much work..

including an ortho of the ship sans every pod.. so this is the quick escort/courier version

    enjoy!

I've been thinking about doing that same self-illuminated thing for my hull markings. It looks good, and it makes a great deal of sense.
  • VALKYRIE013VALKYRIE013547 Posts: 1,473Member
hmm... just the specular shine.. it isn't glow in the dark :)
  • Polaris 004Polaris 004199 Posts: 752Member
Man those nacelles are SLICK. And the start on those textures makes me want to learn mapping after all. There's nothing flashy or ostentatious here, it's just all done really, really well, and your choices are all so smart right off the bat.

it isn't glow in the dark

Oh. Well, I've been thinking about self-illuminating "decals." It just makes sense to me. By the bye, I really like the shape of that ship without the pods.

I agree, it looks like it really fits in around the TNG timeframe without them.
  • publiusrpubliusr550 Posts: 1,747Member
It is still compact both with and without the pods. Great execution.

throwing this one in to my general trek thread since i'm not going to be spending 3 months on it!!

Okay, quick build ( i hope) of the strider class.. found this surfing, some game ship from somewhere...

so putting this in the 2285 + range and calling it a scout/destroyer guessing mainly for planetary defense fleets in size with the akyazi ish..

so couple hours in, pillaged some old builds, namely the oberth not doing a 100% according to the plans ( hate the sideways nacelles.. and the contsituion class bridge looks out of place..)

so just something to get me back in to the modeling vain again
  • BasillBasill172 Posts: 0Member
That's a cute little critter, but it looks a quite a bit further along than 2285. Might just be the "Voyager" like pointy hull. I actually like the sideways nacelles, but I can understand the irk. Upright looks just as cool. :D
