Yeah there where three different vehicles, the dragon was the huge command helicopter then the samson which im doing the variant of, then last was the small attack chopper just a bit smaller than the apache with only one pilot.
With the exhurst the way it is, would'it the backwash hit the tail? the vents should be directed slightly to either side of the tail so the backwash does not hit it.
Yeah your right I didnt think of that, now I understand why helicopters have angled exhausts! Stupid me. Ill change it, nothing is refined yet everything still needs tweaking and detailing.
thanks for the heads up anyway!
Did some more, doing a very different version. Ignore the colours this was just a test render for materials but shows what ive done so far model wise>
Its just over 57,000 triangles at this stage and SU is doing surprisingly well!
Still not a fan of the placement of the door gun, but that's just me.
What I would suggest is retain the old exhaust and simply make a twin-tail design (similar to the Samson, the XV-15 and the MV-22). Also, I'd increase the size of the cargo door by moving that section of fuselage forward till it's about even with the back of the rear cockpit seats.
The door gun is just a backup its not really a full on combat variant, cant move it forward as the pressure/bulkhead that separates the cockpit and read takes up that space. I know what you mean I think im using the cool rule rather than the real one this time but ive changed the design so many times since starting I wouldn't be surprised if I moved it again before this was finished.
Was thinking about having the gun on this side in a small door and then a larger black hawk style door on the other side, I know it wouldnt give cover to the soldiers but whatever! Ill see what I can come up with.
That's actually not too bad. The Seahawk / Jayhawk and Dolphin helicopters only have a cargo door on one side of the chopper. Assuming you're not landing in an LZ that's completely surrounded by hostiles, you wouldn't need a gun on both sides. Another common practice is for the troop-carrying chopper to be escorted by an armed helicopter that remains in the air and provides overwatch.
If you decide to go with one cargo door, consider adding a hoist. Either way, it looks really good.
I too think a different cockpit arrangement might be better. The Samson in Avatar clearly draws it's lineage from the EC135 / 145 and the NH90, so something along those lines would probably be best. Although the Black Hawk family also has some nice features.
As for the refueling boom, I like it. Definitely ties it in with contemporary helos.
Nah ive copied the cockpit directly from the movie and art book wanted to keep something cannon, was maybe thinking of making it a pave low combat S&R variant?
I think I misspoke. I didn't mean the arrangement of the cockpit, but rather the cockpit structure (doors, windows, etc.). They look a little too....cylindrical as is.
I do like the CSAR direction. Don't forget the hoist!
Ahh yes I know what you mean dont worry, I make my parts in sections to keep the working model size down, im making the whole front section in a different file then when its done ill just pop it on the end of the cockpit you understand?
Ya need to smooth those shrouds a bit there big L! And I'm not too keen on the "car paint" texture. Military aircraft don't use reflective materials like that for a whole myriad of reasons. But design-wise, model-wise...I think it's safe to say you have certainly caught up with anything I've pulled off in SU...that is a big fo sho!
yeah I know about all those points dont worry, going to smooth the rotor housing soon. As for the textures they are only placeholders, still getting to grips with kerk materials and unable to find any suitable matte colours at the moment looks like ill have to make my own somwhow!
Yeah haven't finished the nose but im going for function before form. Was trying to copy it from the pavelow. Nah haven't had time to check out halo legends had forgotten about it, have to try and get it today is it out on DVD yet?

But agian, that's just what I'd do.

But I do like the idea of the refuel boom, though I think it would be better above the cockpit.

Impatiently looking forward to next WIP pic.
BTW have you checked out Halo Ledgens yet?
It not bad, sort of reminds me of the animatrix.
