Hey Greg, when i did my sec hull for the Ent-B, I started with a half sphere, then applyed FFD modifier and, later, to make the cut at her back, used an outlined spline and booleans. After that, excluded the portion unneeded out of the boolean. For the last, cleanned the verts. ThatAâs it. Hope that helps.
kind of a kitbash.. based on a design I found ( by Rekkert) of a smaller excellsior class ship, corvette/frigate size I don't have exact numbers on size (need to do that) but around 150-200 meters long. Rekkert has it as a Oberth replacement, science ship, but I'm thinking more of an escort for a larger vessel (during fleet actions of course.. most of the time ships go about there lonesome doing exploration, even this ship, large cargo bay for extended missions. So thinking peremeter action ships, patroling borders, planetary fleets, core world defense, things like that, less amenditys, luxury..
for something thats a kitbash.. kinda taking a bit of time! getting the raised part on the saucer was a Pain!
so here it is, i'll work on this a bit and finish up the trinity, I think of it as an escort for the trinity, so its in this thread.. for now
You know, it would really help if you could render up a size comparison of the Excelsior, Oberth, Trinity and this one. At the moment I still get a "capital ship" vibe from it, like it's pretty much an Excelsior with Oberth nacelles stuck on out of neccessity (Dom War and all).
But I do like it, except for maybe the deflector sticking out so much.

so, as requested, a scale guide for the kumari against the trinity, so here it is! and added some other movie era ships as well to give it a bit more weight! ref said 570 meters for the trinity, so sticking to it for now, kumari is a bit up in the air, but it averages with the deck height from all the other ships, so pretty accurate!
might dabble a bit tonight, but got a model contest this weekend (had one last weekend when i was on vacation too!! love it!) so be out most of the time, but will dabble a bit with it this weekend.. till then!!
Know I'm a little late to the thread, but am loving the work so far--know the site you got the blueprints from quite well and love Jim Morvay's designs. Can't wait to see the completed thing

Meshsmooth a box a couple times, and use a spherify modifier to make sure it's 100% round.
The rest should be pretty obvious...the resulting object looks very dense but is actually only 10k polygons..and not even optimized in the flat areas
Nice trick to smooth a box instead of starting with a sphere...i'll have to remember that . I'm really liking the lighting and texturing too! good job!

Hopefully the ship's got a good tactical officer, would hate to see the 2 ventral phaser banks all the way back nick the nacelles Love it though! :thumb:
I like the ship and the design a lot, the only small thing, and it is a nitpick are the mega-phasers. They have no firing angle. You could make them similar to the Ingram which move so that they have a greater field of fire?

so next is maybe some compositing on some bg stuff, like to redo Roli's dock more inline with the generations dock, and put her in there as well!
so next is........ good question gravitating between a romulan design or a cardasian galor... kinda want an enemy for the movie-era ships.. other than the BOP, not much exists for that era.. no roms, gorns, tholians, etc. , sure fan designs, but nothing cannon... but have some wiggle room with the trinity since it probably lasted for awhile, into tng time frame... don't know.. thinking it out.. need to look at some bird designs...
as for releasing her... I work in Maya to let you know, and I do occasionally release, but on a case by case bases, kind of leary of what can happen.. been 2 months of my life here...

I don't know the tool in Max, or any other program that is comparable to the Cut Faces Tool in Maya
basically, creates a straight line threw the entire mesh selected..
and when extruded use the scale tool to colapse the selected polys to get a smooth hull, then clean up by merging the verts/points/ whatever...
