Nice work! Reminds me I should give one of these a try too!

Heh heh, nice work on that shuttle design Starrigger, you've done a fantastic job which is really faithful to the original design. Looks spot on, and fits in nicely flying into Theed.

That last comparison render also highlights just how close you've managed to get to the original, not many designs survive wholey intact when they make the transfer from 2d sketch to 3d so well. So after over 10 years it is great to finally see this thing in the flesh.

    Thanks a lot.

    Hi there Japetus,

You're more than welcome to go for either of those two designs mate. The first one is a shuttle very close to the design they did go for in the end, but this one had the engines that I preferred of the two. The second one is the Super Killer Ship Boss spacecraft from the game that they went for, the design changed a bit as they wanted to incorporate some alien tech into the design which was due to a key part of the plot of that game. Basically those solar fins at the back were changed, which I didn't mind as I thought that was the weakest part of the design anyway. So with either of them, knock yourself out.

i would say the second one looks better except for the "solar fins" which i would replace with fins or engine pods. both are very interesting though.

i like the solar fins on the 2nd one very unique design

Funny, I didn't think they were solar fins but more like banners. Kind of like you might have if a bunch of these ships did a low level fly-by during a military parade and they all had colourful banners flying in the breeze as they go past the viewing stands.

Yes that really is the first thing I thought of when I saw them :shiner:

So I would like to see you make the second ship :)

Heh, well you're actually not that far off in some respects, the solar panel array at the rear was kinda designed to almost be like a form of Peacock plumage, so you could easily spot this key spacecraft amongst the other enemy fighters as it whizzed through space and then target it.

Oh, and one last note Japetus, in case you do decide to go with taking a crack at the Super Killer Ship, that cockpit/command module section is designed to be detachable, from just ahead of where that warning triangle decal is just behind it. I designed it that way with the idea being that if the turbine/reactor power source thing for the primary weapon should go critical for any reason they could detach from the weapon platform and escape the detonation.

I would like to see the first ship, however I think seeing something with a bit more curves may be nice. So my vote goes for the second ship.
  • japetusjapetus2957 SeattlePosts: 1,399Member
Haha ok second ship it is! I was leaning towards that one as well because of the interesting shapes to it. Funny about the solar sail array, all I can think of when I see it is Count Dookoos ship in Attack of the Clones. Ill try to free up some time to start. Thanks again Talon for letting us model your designs! Out of curiosity do you have images of the fins.ql designs? I'm curious to see how they turned out. I googled the game last night but didn't find much about the ships themselves.

Y'know I don't? I really should have grabbed copies of the ships that got built from my designs, but I only really have my own 3d work from that game. Should get in touch with the artist who did them and get him to send them over. Was more than starfighters and transports too, there were a few space stations that were key locations, an asteroid ore mining rig, all sorts of crap.

I've done a quick hunt for screenies, annoyingly thin on the ground for the ships. This one is of the alien fighter which the tech was taken from to develop the human corporation alien hybrid killer ship, so the spiky array you can see at the rear with the glowy stuff going on in between is kind of the way the array they put on my design looked.

Will keep hunting for a shot of the full fighter.

Here's a nice shot of one the space installations I designed...

But I'm afraid that damned ship is proving quite elusive.

very good, probably would be a better model with something else other than those solar sails.
  • japetusjapetus2957 SeattlePosts: 1,399Member
Yeah I'm thinking of ditchign the sail, a putting on a few more antenna, maybe put on a few small wings/fins. Then trying to find a place to put a few small defensive lasers. Seems weird to have one mega laser on the front with nothing else to defend itself with, but I don't want to detract from the overall feel of it.

Nice one Japetus, liking the look of that, it is much more in keeping with the original concept than the in game version ever was.

As far as the details at the rear are concerned I'd try and have some form of array back there as it adds a good bit of balance to the ship to have this broad array of material to the rear, but feel free to come up with your own design, as I said earller, that solar fin array get up I put in there was easily the weakest part of the design, so I was actually quite happy when the game's plot dictated that they change it, and it did actually look pretty good with that spiky alien energy array thing going on back there, but yeah, do as you see fit as far as I'm concerned.

With regards to the lack of secondary weapon systems, you could put something in there if you want to, some of my other designs for the Super Killer Ship did in fact have other cannons in addition to the primary weapon, but in this case the idea was that it would almost be like a bomber with a fighter escort. So when this thing came on the scene in game it was usually amongst a swarm of less deadly starfighters, and you'd have to try and isolate it and kill it before it got to its target, or before it managed to take you out.

Looking forward to seeing more on this, a cracking start.

Been a long time since I worked on this guy, but now I"m starting it up again since I've finished some other projects. I feel like the front is pretty good, plan on texturing in some more panels signage stuff, but the back and those antenna things in the back need a bit more.

very cool ship, is that a gun or intake on the front? nice panelling and a good engine glow.

It's supposed to be a huge cannon I guess. Maybe it's the sniper of the fleet ;) I was looking through my "Vehicles of Star Wars" book (from back in the day) and thought about putting little defensive lasers like in the Sun Crusher from the SW Expanded Universe: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sun_Crusher

avoid more than 1 or 2 extra guns, this is a small ship and seems as if it only has a 1 man crew, it would be too tricky to control lots of guns. also any mass added by the small guns means either lower performance and accelerations or less mass used for the main weapons system. that wheel like shape is rather awesome. how did you model the paneling?
  • TALON_UKTALON_UK2 Posts: 0Member
Nice to see you return to this old girl Japetus. Looking good. Loving the engine array glow at the back, looks like the rear lights on an American muscle car. Hull paneling and all that stuff looks sweet. can't quite see what is going on with that defensive cannon in these shots, is it supposed to be mounted on the main body atop the primary weapon? What I'd suggest there is perhaps mounting them in the belly of the cockpit section, perhaps inset into the hull or mounted in weapons blisters. Then if the cockpit section needs to detach it still has that defensive weapon capability.

As for that pesky array it is a tricky one. I was just thinking on looking at your work just now that some sort of crystalline based array with inverted coffin lid like hexagonal shaped panels in a necklace like pattern between the two struts creating a wide fan array of these crystal hexagons (the angle of the hexagons would have to be just shallow enough that the lower and shorter end towards the center of the array could line up with each other to create the curvature of the array), perhaps with thin borders and some connective materials between the panels, then have a similar array but with just two or three panels for each of the ventral struts. Might have to draw it out to see how it works, but I reckon that could look quite cool, then you'd just have to think about how you want to deal with the crystal material, make it just glass like, or have it glowing with weird alien looking energy patterns or something. The ventral struts should also have some working mechanical elements to it so it looks like those struts could raise up and twist slightly to allow the ship to land. I'd see the landing gear coming out of the side panels of the housing for the cylindrical generator, with perhaps a short nose gear coming out of the lower front of that structure.

For the rear of the body it might be a nice idea to have some sort of rear facing weapon mount between those two drive matrices, perhaps an aft firing torpedo launcher or mine layer or something to deter pursuing enemy vessels?

Loving your work on this, can't wait for the next update.

Oh, and in answer to that question regarding the crew, I saw this as a two man crew, pilot and weapons officer. So pilot in charge of the forward defensive lasers (if you go with them), and the weapons officer in charge of the primary weapon and rear weapon system, plus navigation and that sort of thing.
  • japetusjapetus2957 SeattlePosts: 1,399Member
Yeah, I saw this as 2 man also. Which area are you referring to when you talk about the "crystalline base array"? That sounds cool, although you may have to do a little sketch for me :)
  • japetusjapetus2957 SeattlePosts: 1,399Member
Oh and it's cool you say the engine reminds you of a classic muscle car, cuz that's where I got the inspiration myself! :thumb:
  • TALON_UKTALON_UK2 Posts: 0Member
Heh, cool, thought as much. Okay, here is a quick basic sketch I cobbled together in Photoshop to give you an idea of the design I'm thinking of. You might need to make the angles shallower than I have here so the outer ends are closer together, or you could add additional intermediate panels in between, which might be a good way to go. Either way it should help you understand where I'm coming from. I'd also see the frames as being slightly thicker than the crystalline surface within. With that you can have fun with how you'd like to portray it. The crystal surface could have a honeycomb pattern to the matrix for example, I think some sort of pulsating glow might look pretty cool too. Also don't forget that in addition to what you see in the sketch the thing also slants back in keeping with the original array design.

Let me know what you think.

    Something like this?

Not quite, I mean still keep them mounted on the pylon that was there before. Have that cylindrical object rotate so that the pylon can go horizontal for landing, and at the end of the pylon where the array is, have a rotational assembly so the array's angle can be adjusted too along the pylon's axis. More in keeping with the original concept design so the panels essentially form a kind of fan that sticks out to the side and also slants back. With the array panels themselves I think they need to be quite a bit bigger, and the angle between each of them needs to be less so the array looks a little tighter. I might have a go at trying to add the sort of design I'm thinking of to the original concept sketch. Or failing that maybe quickly mocking up the array in 3d to get the idea I have across. Looks like an interesting start.
