College and ROTC are hell when you want to draw but don't have the time. Anyway, this is a WIP for a Cylon War-era destroyer. Its about 770 ft long and 160 ft high, I haven't determined the beam yet. It mounts two cannon turrets and its main armament is its four missile mounts, in this case carrying 20 missiles (2 6-tube, 2 4-tube). The aft mounts are rotatable, the front fixed. It still needs to be detailed and finished and the top view is a placeholder. The text is incorrect, it should say "Destroyer Resistance DD-04 BSG-75."

Very good work for all of your designs.
First B.J, now you... great ideas and designs... if only someday we could see them converted into meshes for all to enjoy... :D
    Keep up the great designs!!
Those capital ships are sweet, more please... :p
  • TalosTalos0 Posts: 0Member
    Thanks Sanjurjo!

The ships'll keep coming, I have 3 more variants of this hull planned. They are a late-war refit with bulges, reduced missile armament, removed bridge, and AA weapons. The next is a refit of the refit, with internally mounted missile, and other new technology. The final one is an Escort Carrier. I also have planned, a frigate/corvette, cruiser, and a newer, larger, and more advanced destroyer.

I like your updated version of the Scarlet Viper.

Nice start on the destroyer. I was wondering when you would get around to do some of the capital ships.

    Can't wait to see more.

Thanks S@S, I've had the ideas kicking around in my head for awhile, as shown in that old Colonial Fleet pic many pages back in this thread. I got inspired a few days ago but didn't get a chance to do anything until today. Hopefully I'll be able to work on it for a little while tomorrow (have to run a gun range most of the day), and add some detailing, as well as cleaning up the top view.

EDIT: Oh, there was one thing irking me about the EW.Mk II above, I'm going to lower the tail to get rid of that part where it angles back.

I had some time this afternoon to work on my destroyer so I started detailing it. I also added a pair of four-barrelled AA guns near the waist as well as brand new cannon turrets, which I'm much happier with. I'm posting to versions of the WIP, one with and one without callouts.

Not bad, not bad. Looks interesting. :) We don't (or at least me, i haven't seen too many Season 2 eps.) see too many Colonial warships, apart from the Big G and the Big P... Good work. I dunno why the Galactica was alone, and not forming part of a Battlegroup, like a modern day carrier, perhaps since it would be decomissioned and converted into a museum...
  • TalosTalos0 Posts: 0Member
My thoughts are that Galactica's battle group was already disbanded, that the other ships were in dock already, undergoing refit, reassignment, or in the case of the Resistance, retirement.

That reminds me, I'm writing a list of BSGs and the ships within them for the D20 RPG I'm doing the art and such for. I'm still adding to it and it's incomplete.

The following paragraph is from a post I made on the WOTC BBoard for the BSG D20 project.

Okay, here is some background stuff I've been fiddling with. I'm going to do a writeup on a Colonial Militia, seperate organizations based on the planets, eg: the Aerelon Militia and Picon Militia (like the Va National Guard, etc). I intend to make them more reflective of the TOS fleet, including brown and khaki uniforms (more like the TNS show in cut), as well as calling the pilots Colonial Warriors. My campaign is going to focus on the lesser parts of the Fleet, reserves and the Militia. The ship the PCs will be on is the training ship Hermes, formally the battlestar Columbia BS-07, lead ship of Galactica's class. It's been reduced to a gunnery and pilot training ship, stripped of most weapons, leaving her 8 cannon turrets, 100 PD turrets, and equipping two of the Mercury class bow batteries, since it is supposed to train crews in their use. It can also operate squadrons of cadets and nuggets off her flight decks, up to and including Mk VII Vipers and Mk IV Scorpions. The other ship in Hermes' group (TG-07), the ex-Zealous, is a TOS-style battlestar, formally known as Triton BS-14. She was decommisioned and converted into a pilot training ship and renamed Zealous, TS-14, serving alongside the gunnery training ship Hermes. About 5 years before the Cylon attack, Aerelon Fleet Yards was expanding rapidly and needed living spaces desperately so the Fleet Command decommissioned Zealous and converted it too a barracks ship, permanently mooring it too the station. Stripped of engines, weapons, heavy equipment, and filled with living quarters and cargo space, it is now known as Module 14.

I don't know about that, I'm pretty sure we don't see an original series battlestar in the museum and Galactica is described as one of the first battlestars ever, several times.

I like this but I think the engines should be much more inegrated into the hull, as with all the other ships. The missiles don't quite sit well with me. The Soviets developed huge anti-shipping missiles for the very reason that they could not build a large fleet, let alone super carriers carriers, that could face the U.S. Navy. What we see in nBSG is basicaly the US vs Soviet naval doctrine, where the few, weak, Cylon ships fight with powerful missile barrages at a distance, while the Colonials rely on huge fighter wings to penetrate defenses. Okay, it's not perfect because the Colonial ships have huge amounts of armor and extremely powrerful guns, it breaks the comparison though but you do end up with tactical themes to both sides.

Cylons: Missiles, Fighters, minimal armor, no ship board guns.
Colonials: Fighters, hideously heavy armor, extremely heavy and ample guns, the occasional fighter launched missile.

So, that Colonial destroyer, I think frigate is more suitable, should have anti-fighter missiles, not anti-ship missiles, or at least much smaller anti-ship missiles. Also, the anti-fighter gun is badly placed, the missile racks block the field of fire too much.

Actually, there are pictures of the TOS battlestar in the museum in the Miniseries, no models as far as I know.

Thanks for the critique Major, a lot of what you disagreed with I did on purpose. I was inspired by early WW1/Interwar destroyers with this design. The primary weapons reflect this, couple cannon turrets and antiship missiles instead of torpedos. It's supposed to have been design either before or during the early stages of the war. The primary tactic of a wing of these ships would be to sweep in towards Basestars and fire a barrage of missiles before turning away back beyond Cylon attack range. I was trying to distinguish this ship from other Colonial warships, bucking the design trends, like what happens in real-life naval designs. The engine placement is inspired by the Rodger Young from Starship Troopers. Since the ship is lightly armored (it is a destroyer after all), the engines and fuel bunkerage are kept seperate from the living quarters and such, in a place which, if destroyed, would minimize damage to the rest of the ship. The missile pods are designed for quick replacement by tenders and have a bit of inspiration from the Salamis cruiser from Mobile Suit Gundam. AA gun placement is intentional, most destroyers early in WWII had only a few AA guns, mosty 1.1 pounders (which this gun is a homage to), and .50 cal machine guns, all these guns are usually poorly placed.

Most of these kind of problems are dealt with in the refit. The ships are bulged, have their rear missile pods removed to conserve mass. The quad AA guns are replaced with a dual gatling gun CIWS like those on Galactica and are mounted farther outboard for better fields of fire due to the bulges. Also, multiple gatling-style cannons are placed over the hull of the ship, providing a much better AA screen. This reflects the change in destroyer tactics in WWII. A second refit will mount more modern weaponry and will dispense with the remaining missile pods, replacing them with tubes imbedded in the bulges.

I have a frigate design in the works, it's an AA and light escort, intended to be pickets and fast, light responders, think of them like WWII destroyer escorts. There will also be a new generation destroyer which will have more modern weapons like VLS, as well as having different style engines.

Hmm, that was too much writing at 6:00am, sorry if any is incomprehensible, I'm still waking up. :D

Here's the current state of the WIP. I've added panel lines for the side view and started to block in the shape of the top. I also added the side view of the twin gatling turret that'll replace the quad AA gun in the destroyer refits (the smaller one is in scale with the ship). Single gatling guns will be placed around the ship in refits as well.

Not bad, looking better for moments.
Fit the BSG style of machinery designing, but maybe it will look better finished , keep it coming! :)

The Vipers look awesome, keep it going!

I'm new here and I was wondering if you just use photoshop or illustrator to do these or is it something else?

    Thanks a lot

    Thanks fixxpanel!
I actually draw these in Microsoft Publisher, although I'm experimenting with CorelDraw for shading.

@Sanjurjo: I'm keeping little touches from other BSG ships in this design, but making it unique too. The turrets and gatling are based on BSG designs and the vent panels behind the turrets are from the Pegasus.

I finally got a chance to get some drawing done, so here is an almost finished Viper T.Mk I production blocks drawing. It's still missing the open cockpits for some of the Ts, cleaned up upgraded nose and tails, and needs a general cleanup still.

    Not bad, well designed.
But maybe the 2nd cockpit it's a little too cramped, either the intructor/cadet, whoever is on the aft cockpit, will have a little problem if he/she is mmm... "big" :D nonetheless, well done, a bigger cockpit would be better, but maybe it would change the appearence of the Viper too much. :)
The last one, the block 45, has side to side cockpit? :)
  • TalosTalos0 Posts: 0Member
Yeah, I've been thinking that as well. I was looking at it today when I wasn't working on a BSG story I've had in the back of my mind and I think I'm going to move the rear seat back farther (it'll probably be hidden from view, behind the aft windows), since it's going to be an instructor or RIO/WSO depending on the version, they won't need really good visibility any way. It wouldn't look right if I extended the cockpit or fuselage any more then they already are.

The block 45 is a single seater, the rear cockpit is filled with extra equipment and a small fuel tank, it's like the single seat versions of the real Hawk trainer, except rarer. The Spectre Mk I bomber I did a few pages back has side by side seating in a widened Viper Mk I fuselage since I based it on the SU-24, SU-34, and F-111 bombers.
  • SanjurjoSanjurjo0 Posts: 0Member
lol, then your TMk1s work like for exemple the F-105G Wild Weasel, the poor guy has little visibility, and a lot of electro-stuff to operate, or like the F-4G Wild weasel, more of the same. I can see them coming to woop some Cylon defense positions
The training version looks realistic, a training version of a Mig was so cramped, i think, that the instructor needed a periscope to look forward!
    Keep up the great work.
  • TalosTalos0 Posts: 0Member
    Thanks!

There are various versions of the two seat Mk Is, the T.Mk I trainer, EW.Mk I electronic warfare escort (like the EA-6B and EF-111), N.Mk I nuclear strike craft (like the Mirage 2000N), and the FGA.Mk I ground attack craft which also can perform Wild Weasel style missions.

At least I didn't stick the instructer in the nose of the plane like the MiG-25. That would be an interesting ride.
  • TalosTalos0 Posts: 0Member
Okay, I got some more art done today, sometimes rainy days are a good think. The EW.Mk block 30 shows how I changed the cockpit, I pushed back the rear seat back. It's still a little cramped getting in, but there should be a lot more room now, and visibility wasn't as badly restricted as I thought it would be.

Next up is an updated PR.Mk I recon bird with added cockpit interior. I also did up another I've had in the works for awhile, the Viper FR.Mk I. Whereas the PR is intended just for recon and has no weapons onboard, the FR is a minimally converted fighter, usually an older one like the block 10 Mk I modified here. It still has a secondary fighter role.

Finally, I made some side views of a few of the other Viper Mk I blocks not pictured in the first set. It's just a rough pic, no titles or anything yet. They are the block 12 (with two different noses), 22, and 30. I'll put in a couple more eventually.

    They're nice. :)
About the PR.Mk.1, and the FR.Mk.1, i supose they have a modular sensor/cameras package. This ones reminds me of the RF-4. Good ones. But they can also carry stores? Wing stores, for example ECM pods, recon pods, or TARPS-like pods, like the one of the F-14... :)
The different block ones are cool, nicely done. You can see the evolution there, just like on any actual plane. :D
  • TalosTalos0 Posts: 0Member
    Thanks Sanjurjo!

The recon birds can still carry wing stores, 4 hardpoints on the Mk I models, except for the N.Mk I which has only two hardpoints that are strengthened and wired for nuclear stores. The camera's in the nose can be changed, this is just the pretty much standard configuration. The super high resolution cameras for space use point to each side. There is the main large one, a smaller backup, and a small IR/EW/etc sensor. The oval ones below are high-res cameras for the conventional ground recon missions. They point downwards. Below the nose is a medium-res targetable camera, useful for scanning and looking around below.

I based these on the dedicated recon planes like the WWII F-series and the Vietnam era RF-s. I figured that the Fleet didn't have a decent TARPS setup with small enough super-hi-res sensors until after the war and the developement of one caused the retirement of the PR/FR a few years after the war.

I'm an aviation enthusiast so I try to base a lot of things on real aircraft, like the evolution in blocks for the Mk I. I thought that there would be more than one of each model. I'll repost the main Mk I block list, the rest of the models.

Your doing some damn fine work here mate... Like you mention above, this really has a live feel to it, woth the blocks and all... I like the way you present it... allmost like flipping through one of those old airplane books with drawings instead of photos...top notch :thumb:
  • TalosTalos0 Posts: 0Member
Thanks Larsen, that means a lot. :)

I have a lot of the Squadron-Signal "In Action" and "In Detail and Scale" series aircraft books, these were the inspiration for arranging the blocks like that.

I think I'm going to work on designing some stores for the Vipers, missiles, rockets, bombs, ecm and recon pods, etc. Plus I need to completely squash and redo the Viper Mk II blocks.

    Hmmm....Viper Mk I in Detail and Scale...:D
  • TalosTalos0 Posts: 0Member
Okay, I added titles to the Viper Mk I block page 2, updated the Civilian Mk I-10, and the "Scarlet Viper," a modified Viper Mk I block 20.

Nice work. I have been following this thread for a while, and love the details shown here.
This is probably the wrong place to ask this, but has anyone seen nice orthos of the MKVII on their travels?
    Just wondering.
