Another first render of the next shot from the movie...lots of fog and smoke, took a while to figure out how to do. Thank god for denoiser! Has temp bug balls in it, will probably add some more wisps of clouds going by in post, but overall I'm pretty happy. Might start with less fog so you can see some stars at the start:
Hoping this week to have 5 or so pretty completed shots in a sequence. You guys have probably seen most of it, but it's good to see them all together! Ive been improving things since I've started so I'll have to spend a little time back tracking standardizing a few things like stars and planet for consistency.
Also rendering shot 1ships finally...its very easy but has the asteroid field behind it which is cool. It's over 300 frames long, so I stuck it on our farm...
Did they just use the cockpit of the jet for the escape pod or vice versa?
Escape pod is another model, fighters were used in the opening shot, very small, on the carrier version, and in a bombing sequence. Pretty small the whole time, but they have pilots in them and cockpits. Pretty cool helmets I might make at least

For some reason I was remembering the escape pod being chunky like this. Definitely a different model lol
Got the TAC fighter all dirtied up. I broke down and brought it into Painter. Auto Unwrap is very nice...last thing I want to add a few decals like Ejection warnings and NO STEPS like in real fighters. And do a quick cockpit and pilots when I get around to it...been real busy at work lately... overall pretty happy for the lack of reference! This auction site had some pretty nice pictures, so that's about most of what I went off of: https://www.icollector.com/Lot-770-STARSHIP-TROOPERS-1997-TAC-Fighter-Model-Miniature_i37999462
Finally got a bunch of the shots together...a pretty good wip. Still hope to do the crashing shot, butni have lots of r&d to do and things to learn. Figured I'd post this. Have to make and add a few other small ships too, and add the fighters to a few shots.
It's a pretty easy hack I learned from Howie Day. It's a cylinder which gets scaled (or push modifier) in and out in one frame, and loop it, the more you scale it the more blurry it is. Then the rest is an animated gradient ramp noise and opacity ramp. I could have used Phoenix to do a fire sim but it worked well enough.
Now, the reason I mention this is that perhaps surface detail on ships could be animated…an Aztec that moves…coruscating liquid patterns on ships…proper video of Mt. St. Helens stills beyond the rough “morphs”…tornadoes…

Started this next shot which should be pretty straightforward...
Thanks! And oh man, you gotta watch it at least once!

I saw something that might not seem to lend itself to models…but may in time:
