  • U.S.S. Salcombe - Star Trek Beyond

I now have all of the major hull pieces at the very least roughed in. I also have the upper saucer detail almost complete now.

I really almost bit off more than I could chew with this this Salcombe, but I'm making it work. The Enterprise-A has a very sculptural form, where the secondary hull, pylons, and nacelles all blend as one piece. I am carrying that same aesthetic over to the Salcombe. This took me four attempts, but I think I have it.

  • U.S.S. Salcombe - Star Trek Beyond

I need more Kelvin timeline ships for my project, so I figured why not make a Salcombe! We don't get a good look at this thing at all in Beyond. It's seen VERY briefly in the background, but it's a really cool design. So I wanted to create a high quality VFX model that can give us a better look. Here is my roughing in of the basic hull shapes.

  • Wrath of Khan - Regula 1 - VFX Shot Recreation

So here is my fully CG recreation of a Regula 1 shot from Wrath of Khan. My aim was to match the same vintage look as a 1982 VFX shot, not a modern one. I was seeing how close I could make a CG shot match miniature work.

To that end, I had to take into account a few considerations. Realistically, as the camera pans down at an angle, the starfield, nebula, and planet should parallax at the same rate.

However, back in 1982 when this shot was made, there was no camera tracking software. The starfield was an element shot through material with back lit holes poked in. The nebula was a cloud tank element, and the moon was a miniature. Because of all the elements being shot seperate, they don't all quite parallax together as they should. If you look really close you can tell, but it's not noticable while just watching a movie. This also happens a ton in the old Star Wars films.

I may come back later on and alter this shot to be a "modern" VFX shot just for comparison sake. Fun little day project! CG Regula model by David Metlesits.

  • U.S.S. Salcombe - Star Trek Beyond

Well, tonight I finally roughed in the rear underside of the secondary hull and pylons. I knew these forms would be really tricky for someone like me who isn't a veteran modeler so I kept putting it off. Nonetheless, I was able to do it. And with that, ALL forms are now roughed in. This is the general body shape. Nacelles are temporary placeholders (but accurate) by Alexander Klemm.

And yes, that is an inverted shuttlebay door.

Alright, the "clean" paint job is done. I will also make a dirty version after re-entry seen in the film.1slq2pf6lk48.jpg

  • Beyond NCC-1701-A Interior

I commissioned Marley Mcleay to concept design a corridor for me. I'm just not a very good designer, so I can't come up with cool things out of thin air. I have attached his concept. I did not use his concept exactly, but I did lift design elements, especially the curved panels around the wall monitor Enterprise MSD. I also took his striking red color pallet, and floor stripe design and incorporated that.

I feel this will be the final design for the main hallway panels. This is the first one I'm REALLY happy with. Now I just need add in doors, and a light fixture in the ceiling, and we're in business.

  • Star Trek Doomsday Machine - Modernized

Made this Doomsday Machine for a personal project. The problem I had was making it be recognizeable as the Doomsday Machine, without looking kind of 60s cheesy. I hope I hit an ok balance here. Concept Art by Justin Banner.
