Wow that's beautiful!! I just found this post, and pardon me if you already answered this, but are you planning to texture this? Either way it's a gorgeous model!!
I do have something. I spent some time creating a transparent plane for the nebula that sits behind the station. came out pretty good. There are 2 slighty different images. I took the images by Amras created an alpha channel so that I could use blenders built in stars system. So, now I can place the nebula where ever I want it. As you can see the stars can be seen thru parts of the nebula.
I have been working on the station. I had to fix some problem areas and I am S L O W L Y working on textures.
If I remember the Starfuries locked into postion before the doors openned.
The Starfuries weren't facing the opening when the doors were opening (weird sentence, I know). They were rotated later. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p04J5N_SEjA
Here are a couple of renders. In these shots you'll notice I cut new detail into Red Sector as well as changing the panels. Also, did some work on the main support for the spine. The spine has undergone some changes too. Mainly the front and above the Cobra Bays.
These renders are at what I call Stage-I texturing.

It's a space station but nonetheless I agree, looks great. Man I miss this show.
