You are right. I doubt there is any Sci-fi show or film where they designed the ships to be actually operational. I bet even good old Kubrick didn't do that for 2001. But you know I spend most of my time on that ship. Even if it is just in daydreams. And somehow that makes me wish it would be just a little bit more real.

The closest I think was the bridge for TMP which was laid out for Phase II and they had designated specific buttons for specific functions and so on to the point they had a flight Manual for the actor's so they could hit the buttons to make things happen on cue.
Really? Didn't know that. I think I have seen some sheets of that flight manual online. But I thought that was something that came later for the fans or from the fans.
Well that's how far my realism goes. Use this to translate if you want
This is supposed to be the reaction-control-system. Usually linked to the helm of course but if necessary you can fire each thruster individually or program sequences with multiple thrusters.
And the position on the console.
Had to realize that I don't have enough space if I want each of the big buttons to represent one single thruster, what I do. I could squeeze them in but I expect that to look dull which is an important criterion, too of course. So I'll probably just replace them with smaller switches.
Okay, new version with switches. It does look better, in a way. Didn't saved me much space though. Still couldn't get enough controls in there for all the thrusters (there are actually a lot of thrusters on the exterior model). But, what the hell? Screw it, I want to move on. I build the idea of it into the set and that has to be enough for now.
I watched a few youtube tutorials the other day and as a result I was able to wrap up this little antenna thing the way I imagined it in the first place. Of course once you know how it is done it's no big deal. But for me that was the highlight of my day.
And I like to reuse things, makes live so much easier.
Communication antenna. I really like it's look (except of the socket). Would be a shame to only use it once. I also thought about giving it a dish like the falcon. But that seemed out of place.
Oh dear heavens, someone has to stop me from using this antenna again.
Also I gave those cushions a proper texture. I couldn't decide in ages how I wanted them to look. Bright or dark, fabric or leather and so on. But I think I have settled on this version for now .
By the way, I think I was wrong when I said that I settled in on the material for the cushions. I found this beautiful worn leather that I figured would be a much better fit for a ship in the Star Wars Universe. And of course I had to test it wherever I could.
Unfortunately it doesn't get along very well with the mostly blue lighting in the cockpit. But the lighting will change anyway as soon as the screens get graphics. I guess I'll have to wait till then before I can make a final decision.
I replaced the displacement with a subtle bump map and focused on the roughness again. Of cause the denoiser erased most of the effect from the roughness map. Sorry for the image flood by the way, but I needed to see how the material behaved under different angels and lighting conditions.
At first I just wanted to quickly give my models a few basic materials to break up the monotony, to get a feeling of how it could look in the end and to grow more familiar with materials and textures in general. Well, that was two years ago and although I know that's not really true it feels like I have done nothing else but experimenting with materials ever since. It's time to let that rest for now and focus on modelling again, like I promised a few posts ago. Might take me a while before I have to show something decent, though. Therefore, see you later.
Didn't really know what to do with the empty space on the weapons control console. So I just made a new monitor. loosely based on the target devices we see through out all star wars productions.
The renders you just posted, the three red switches, they look so satisfying to flip up and down. I imagine they have a nice sturdiness and pleasing clicking noise.

I'm sorry if that makes your life harder but I'm sure I am not the only one who would love to see that.
Another little something that is starting to look like ... well ... something.

More fun with textures and materials.
And the helm is starting to take shape.
Wanted to give my default material a bit more texture. Might have overdone it a bit with the displacement, though.

A little sneak peek won't hurt, though.
Forgot to show with the last post that I also updated the airlock with the red leather that I previously used in the cockpit.
She's looking good!
I guess @Guerrilla couldn't afford the cleaning lady anymore. And with time all this slobber can get really disgusting.
I assume you mean that ironically. I just don't understand what you are trying to tell me.
Thank you, honestly.
