Reduced the cockpit light a little bit and added the falcon additional lights.

Wasn't finished yet. Replaced the rear cockpit panel with a screen acurate version. Also made some small adjustments to the lighting.

My next favorite scene of TESB. 2 days work for 4 seconds.

The Tie fighter canon lasers are animated by hand in MAX. That was no good idea. Maybe it's possible to create that in After Effects in a shorter time ?

In vanilla After Effects there is the BEAM plugin:

After learning how to use the VRAY Renderer I spent some extra time to this shot. Now the X-Wing smoothly fits into the scene.

Although - it's a bit too small for the scene... X-Wing's a pretty large fighter and that guy in the background shouldn't come up even halfway as high as he does...

You're right...I didn't notice the wrong scale. Now it fits better

It's incredible what you can create so quickly with modern tools. The 3D scene contains only 2 light sources and was rendered with global illumination in VRAY. The desert floor and the mountains are real footage. The sky was created by the AI.
A little color adjustment and that's it. The scene is finished so far, a few props are still missing to fill it up.

Spent some more time in this shot. Replaced the X-Wing nose.

    TESB42.jpg

I came up with new camera settings for the Falcon chase. I like them better than the original shots

Suggestion: make the nose part darker, and try to match the R2 shot better.
    Looks a tad bright.
    Looks great other wise

The next shots will be really difficult. Even with particle systems, creating the asteroid field is a real challenge. I actually didn't want to touch this sequence at all...but now that I've started.... ;)

The next shots are easier, because I can use the generated background footage. Flip a little horizontally and vertically and it looks completely different.

    Another iconic scene.

When recreating it in 3ds Max, I noticed that ILM cheated quite a bit with the proportions. The size and distance between the Falcon and the asteroids don't match at all. A clear indication that the asteroid field and the Falcon were filmed separately.

Step by step through the asteroid field

    TESB53.jpg

The cockpit scenes are all rotobrushed in After Effects.

Change the asteroid and the engine glow to get closer to the original shot

    The next shot

For the rest of the sequence i will now create my own scenes.

I know the "shoe in the asteroid field" thing is a myth, but it'd be hilarious if you had one in there. Still, you got pretty close to matching the original VFX.

Shoe - maybe - but the potato in the asteroid field was no myth...
