Some new stuff from the other universe.

In 2009 one of my first 3D projects was to create new CGI VFX of the opening sequence of Return of the Jedi.

A few days ago I found the old project files again.

So I had the idea to re-render the scenes with current technology.

    I see you snuck in a TIE change. You have the TIE Advanced X1 in there instead of a TIE Bomber.

    Finished...If I find a model of the hangar from the second Death Star, I will re-render the hangar scenes.

    Change to 4K version look of the movie...little more brightness

    Replacing the Speeder with a CG model and adding a soft shadows to the ground.

    To cut out the original speeder I replaced the horizon with Photoshop KI function. You don't recognize any difference

    Modern Matte Painting

    In the 80s, fitting a live action scene into a matte painting was a common procedure.

    Here I created the background scene in CG and combined it with the live scene.

    It doesn't look bad.

    Change some greebles at the wall and switched the mental ray renderer to soft shadows. The result is fascinating but about 5 minutes render time for one image

    Increase the details to the Deathstar front to get a much closer look to the original. Changing also to soft shadows.

    Fantastic work. Your lighting looks great. It's a shame the model isn't more accurate to the movie, but there's not a lot you can do about that.

    I've often wondered what lands in the larger bays. Besides of course the Emperor's shuttle. After all, you don't greet your dictator leader in the small bay. ;) It would be cool to see a large transport or something that could land there. Maybe huge supply ships for the construction or troop transports.
