Please say you are going to do an animation with this!?
That's ultimately the goal. Unfortunately my Core i5-4670K isn't up to the challenge so I'll need to wait until I can upgrade. It takes about 15 minutes to render a reasonably low-noise image at 1080p. I'd like to do it in 4K. Now if only @Howard Day would let me borrow his new rig for a little while (pretty please? ...)
So I decided to tackle the most difficult of the accessories first, and that would be the gangway. I think they kitbashed a model diesel engine for the mechanism, so I found a Caterpillar four-cylinder that looked close and made a (highly simplified) replica.
I think Starfleet needs to work on its cable management.
So I'm pretty much done with the modeling on this (as if one could ever be "done" modeling this thing; it seems there's always something new to discover). I also cleaned up the lighting by using the KISS method. Now it's just one key light and one fill light. The HDRI I was using was causing weird artifacts. I still need to add the spotlights for the Enterprise. Here is a draft render with the studio Enterprise. I only had time to do one this morning. More to come...
That's just about the highest praise I could ever hope to get. Thank you so much!
Travel Pod
This model would not be complete without the auxiliary craft flying around, so I'm getting started on the travel pod. There's a ton of stuff going on for such a small craft; the height on the panels is only 1/8".
Nice work on the pod so far. That's seriously one of my favorite movie era designs. It's not very pretty or super complex in its design, it just looks functional.
@evil_genius_180 I totally agree. Richard Taylor hated the design; he called it a "space guppy" or something. But it can't be denied that it looks like it would do what it was designed to do.
Pretty much finished the modeling. Moving on to textures next.

Yeah, the same guy who wanted to completely redesign the Enterprise from scratch, but Gene Roddenberry made him use what Matt Jefferies had done for Phase II as a starting point. Probably Taylor's best contribution to Star Trek was hiring Andrew Probert as a concept artist.
Finished texturing. I toned down the weathering a bit as the original was a bit too grimy for my taste. Now I need to finalize the lights and I can wrap up the pod.

Added the Enterprise spotlights:

Testing the lighting on the ventral side of the saucer. Plus I added a basic starfield.
