3DStormtrooper, Take 2

Hi all,

about 5 or 6 years ago I posted some work that I had done on a stormtrooper helmet - the original thread is long gone, but I've been tinkering with the model again. I still need to make some adjustments to the helmet itself (I'm not totally satisfied with it), but I've started on the rest of the armor:

More to come. I'm almost finished the abplate now, I'll post shortly. :)

Terry, I think that is the best trooper I have ever seen.........

I gotta agree with Road Warrior. Really, really nice.

I'm trying to resist the temptation to compare your helmet here with the one I modeled to see if I got anything wrong. :D

Thank you all, very much! I think that it's an interesting challenge. I'm shooting for the ANH stunt version (my favorite :) ). I should have more done shortly, and will continue to tweak the helmet - I'm going to choose one from the film and try to match it, probably the easiest way to go about it given that they were all assembled slightly differently. I've got an idea for the black body suit and gloves that I'm excited to try. I've got the handplates done (ANH stunt), and they'll attach to the gloves, hopefully in the next couple of days. I started the rifle awhile ago as well (British Sterling ANH conversion with Hengstler counter). Fun!

Thank you! A few tweaks and I think it'll be there. Some preliminary work on the gloves and handplates:

If it wasn't levitating, I might think you took a picture of some armor. ;)

Thanks all! I'm hoping to finally get around to making those changes to the helmet in the next day or so, as well as wrapping up the ab plate. I'm trying to pay special attention to the way that it'll hang on the person, and that it's not just a rigid robot. I'll try to get a bunch of the under suit stuff down shortly as well.

Do tell - which set do you have? Or is it a homebrew? :)

That's a really great model! As others already pointed out, it looks very photorealistic. :thumb:

    How politically incorrect!
He is simply poly challenged! :)

    Thanks for posting the wires!

So, is this a subdivided version of a coarser control mesh, or is this the actual mesh that you work on? I.e, do you model this using subdivision surfaces, or plain poly modeling? (Just curious about your workflow)

Fantastic mate, and kudos especially on the helmet, that must have been a bee hatch to get right.

    Thanks all!

Haha Yeah, it's a "little dense" - I'll have to work on that. :) He is very poly challenged, that's for sure!

This is the actual mesh, I didn't originally model it as a subdivision surface like one normally would, although I'm sure that I could have. That said, it can be rendered as a sub'd surface if I see any "nickling" in a closeup.

Thanks Wiz! Yeah, the helmet is an ongoing work in progress, still not 100% happy with it. I need to sharpen the details around the eyes as well as making some other adjustments. I'm still debating whether or not to make the helmets asymmetrical, like the originals.

I'm in the process of going through ANH to find a full body shot of a stormtrooper with good posture and proportions that I'll use as a guide for the position and placement of the armor pieces - the variation amongst the suits and the actors wearing them is remarkable, to say the least. :) It's amazing how clumsy and rough they look on Blu-ray.

Here's a WIP of one of the pieces that connects to the ab plate:
