3DTOS Lincoln Class - Model for 3D printing

edited October 2023 in Work in Progress #1
I needed a test subject to improve my skills in modeling for model kit printing and this design by Bernd Schneider of Ex Astris Scientia is a perfect target (though I'm taking liberties to add more details and make it more like something on the shows), since I also have a 1/600 TOS Enterprise in my model kit stash for kitbashing (since that kit has severe accuracy issues).
At that scale, her 174m length would translate into 29cm in length (().95ft), the TOS Enterprise is usually estimated to be about 330m.

Always cool to see a 3D take on one of Bernd's ships, nice!

Started to hollow out some parts of the model before cutting the windows and other details.
At 1/600 scale, a 2mm wall thickness will make it necessary to have them 1.2 meters in-scale.
The secondary hull looks pretty wonky right now, because it's currently seen as a solid block of plexiglass. 😄

    Thanks!
    It's from https://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/my_ships.htm
I've done 3D models of some of his ships in the past, but this is the first time I want to turn one into a model kit for my own purposes, complete with electronics.

It's so nice to see one of Bernd's designs getting some love. His site is one of the best Trek sites on the internet, in my opinion. I've had it bookmarked for ages, and I always start there when I'm looking for references or I want to learn something about a model by reading one of his fantastically researched articles.

Decades ago, I modeled two of his other designs and might give those another chance if things work out.

Sorry, the only one I might try at some point if things work out is this one:

Lots of smaller progress, including the internal cutout stuff currently obviously hidden. The centimeter scale below and the LED placeholders give a better sense of scale.

Considering the scale and some mentioned details (lighting) Im gonna guess your gonna resin print this?

That's the plan (though I won't take my printers out of mothballs until the move to a bigger apartment next year).
Resin for the outer hull, filament for the inner frame that will be holding components, in case I need to make changes.
It will probably be one of three models to accompany a Revell TOS Enterprise (modified to be something else), hence the scale that's already locked.

Fleshed out the window arrangement. Had to move them a bit from the height levels in Bernd's schematics so they'd all fir the idea of an internal deck layout. The "deck lines" denote the upper edge of a window row, not deck floors.

Still pondering if I should add a panorama window arrangement at the rear of the sphere one level below the bridge, as a conference room like those larger window sections on later ships from TMP onward. That idea had to start somewhere.

If you add conference room windows, maybe do something to differentiate them from the other windows. Maybe 3 large round ones to contrast with all the square ones on the rest of the hull. Or, tall ovals to suggest a precursor to all the ones on the 1701-D. Just some thoughts.

Interesting. I was toying with the idea of that in the Enterprise-D pic, vertical windows with one edge notched out, but that applied to large vertical windows like on the aft of the TMP Enterprise's superstructure.

Got sidetracked from my other model for 3D printing with some others that should've only come afterward.

The DY-300 is later design Rick Sternbach made for the Spaceflight Chronology book and a fan later refined into the above version.

Not sure if I'll complete the pre-TOS Hyperion above, would probably rather print and build this one, based on the hull shape from https://www.deviantart.com/scifigeek1991/art/Colwin-Class-Utility-Frigate-888304493(but with several changes as seen in the images):

Wow, that's s cool design. I definitely like your version better due to the nacelle spacing. I also like the changes to the nacelles and the addition of the pod up top.

    Gundam shuttles maybe?

You don't see a lot of anime ship toys--just Mecha.

Not really my thing, though I have some Gunpla kits in my model kit stash.

One thing I might make one day is some maintenance/recovery trucks from 08th MS Team for a diorama, when it's time to build and upgrade that Ez8 kit.
