  • The UNITI Project (Community WIP thread) - 2D & 3D

Okay, this is about the fifth time I have tried to make this next ship, but I think I'm getting it to a tolerable position now.

Okay, managed to get my last WIP out of Max and into Blender. This is one of the replacements above three of the ships I was replacing. See that red blip between them near the noses? That's the vending machine... :)

I don't want to try 'adjusting' the replacement as I wasn't liking how it was going, but this will, at least, give me scale and some guidance on my replacement replacement... yay!

Also, finally managed to get some proper three point lighting at last.

Is anyone else just starting out in Blender? Most Blenderheads I see in here are waaaaay profficient. Us noobs gotta stick together and learn right? ;) =)

Not really learned anything new tonight, just getting a bit more comfortable with throwing some primitives together.

So I can sort of apply textures. I did manage to move some UV shapes around, but then I seem to have lost it... A guy in a video just pressed 'something' and seemed to be able to apply single pixel colours to whole faces, but hey... It's still technically day one.

Okay, think I've got enough basics to start trying properly... now I need to get the files from the old PC, into a state where I can get a good look at them and continue the same styling, whilst moving into a completely different tool...

But then this is why I restarted at the 'beginning' of the space history, so I'd cut my teeth on 'antique' ships and develop newer ones as my skills improve...

Current WIP, which you may find a low poly version of in that ship line up. Given this item is less curved and more greeble-y, I'm finding it easier to get started.

oooh, Coolhand liked my last pics. For you youngu'uns out there Coolhand is like the original uber-guy here and back in 2002 I was enthralled by all his Russian space fleets. He's probably gotten even better in that time whereas both me and my software have stayed the same. I do occasionally give Blender a try but everything feels counter intuitive and all other 3D applications now seem to be a rolling subscription. Maybe after I've paid off my -next- mortgage. :)

Anyway, I've done more stuff since, like upgrading the landing gear.

Hello. I've half filled a lever arch folder with text, sketches, ideas, and fiddly bits. I haven't figured out how to make this interesting enough for more people to want to take part yet, stories, youtube videos, pictures and various things don't seem to have appealed (Even my attempts at paying people for work have not panned out!) Obviously the most important job opening is head of marketing. :p

Anyway, here's some shots of the Eden. If anyone wants to model another 'realistic' design, 2 more came 80 years after this one. (And pre-date all other human ships in the IP)

So I did make a ship after this, but somehow it ended up being a quarter of the size it was supposed to be, so I decided to park that and use it for a civilian ship later. I don't have many civilian ship designs, and it seems sensible they might 'copy' military designs after the fact.

Anyway, I decided to restart, and start with a detailed bit, having a go at making some gun turrets.

Had a brief panic attack about 90 minutes in when Blender just closed... But thankfully it has an autosave feature... *mops brow*

So here are some practice gun turrets, plus vending machine...

  • Destroyat Class w/ some interiors

Oh wow, how have I not seen this before?... and how have you managed to get that much interior? Granted I was using an ancient version of Max and an ancient PC, but mine started slowing down quite a bit when I just did a couple of decks with some really low detail (albeit inefficiently modelled) bits... Ungh, I wish I didn't find blender so anti-intuitive! :)

These are all great, the only thing I'd crit for the flyby is to slow it down, obviously to give the viewer more time to bask in the glory of all that interiorness, but that will probably take 3 times as long to render out I guess. :)
