In fact, the blu-ray sets for TNG have been cheaper on release day than their DVD counterparts were on their release day... especially on Amazon...

However, the TNG DVD's used the same old original transfer... so what's been done is CBS has went back to the original film negatives, re-scanning the film negatives and are piecing the show back together as if were just filmed today.

    From Relics:

    SD scaled up to HD

Original negatives scanned and re-composited in HD

    The quality difference is phenomenal...

yeah i can clearly see the difference in those, i'm just surprised the remastered version isn't on dvd also.

They probably don't think it would be cost effective, since they're redoing these specifically for blu-ray...

I can ask someone for clarification...

    Update:
Friend of mine says it's because they want to sell HD. Two formats at the same time would be disastrous for them.

Yes, DVD is good enough. Plus, for those of us who have already invested so much in DVD, there's not point in buying all of the series again.

The truth of the matter is, Blu-Ray hasn't been the big seller that they'd hoped it would be because most people have the same viewpoint as spacefighter. Remember the "HD Wars" of about a decade ago? Remember how Blu-Ray won that hard fought battle and the makers were so excited? Well, it turns out most people don't give a frack. Technically, Blu-Ray was supposed to have already phased out DVD by now, but we still see DVD players and movies being sold. They've even tried limiting the special features you get on DVD and trying to entice you to buy the Blu-Ray with more special features, but most people won't do it because of the price difference. The recession also clearly hasn't helped Blu-Ray, since most people can't afford to spend extra money on movies. Also, Blu-Ray has been seriously hurt by the introduction of streaming and digital downloads. (which are also cheaper)

What really pisses me off are the "combo packs." They charge more money for those than a single Blu-Ray. I don't need three copies of a film, I just want one Blu-Ray. However, with most films that come in those packs, you don't get that option.

I got the Terminator Anthology blu-ray set brand new for only $18.97... regular price on Amazon right now is $31.49, MSRP is $49.99...

Something about how it was being sold made it cheaper.

You probably got it at the price of the first two films and they included the other (inferior) films as freebies. Actually, Terminator: Salvation is good, but Terminator 3 is just cheesy. (I own it, of course, but that's beside the point)

"Watch it? No, we can't do that."

Yea, I got a blu-ray drive for my computer... then found out I needed at least a DVI capable screen to play the discs... until then, I'd been using a flat panel display with VGA connection.

All the extra money I had to spend just to watch a simple blu-ray.

I have two words for you, Chris: Black Friday. (I don't know if they have great days for sales like that where you live, Martocticvs) I got a sweet deal on a Samsung Blu-Ray player a couple years ago. It was a $100 player that I got for $70 on Best Buy's website. I didn't even have to got stand in line anywhere. ;) It works great, though I don't have a huge collection of Blu-Rays, so I mostly watch DVDs on it.

Yeah they seem to have started doing those sales here in the last year or so. Some friends of mine managed to pick up a nice TV at a very low price.

You'll be pleased to know that in some places here, though, you could find similar levels of human stupidity/greed you occasionally see in your own :p People stand in line at those sales? hehe
  • evil_genius_180evil_genius_1804256 Posts: 11,034Member
Yeah, I thought I'd heard that they started doing those sales over there, but I wasn't sure. I don't stand in those lines. I do my shopping online. Sure, you don't get the "doorbusters," but then you also don't have to go anywhere. However, if other people want to stand in those lines, more power to them. I've seen people on the news who were missing having Thanksgiving with their families just to camp out in front of some store (like Best Buy) to get a TV or some toy or game for their kid. That's not my style. Usually, if I actually go to a store on Black Friday, it's later in the day. You still get good deals, there's just less stuff available and you don't get the crazily low prices. (but, you get sleep )

the truth in the uk about a lot of the sales is only a minority of the items sold by the shop are reduced and they are deliberately low in stock on those items, hence people turn up to the store to get the product but find that the store has sold out. now they are inside the sore they look around anyway and buy something else, which is either at it's usual price or the price has been elevated for the duration of the sale. the other trick of sales is to get people to think they need something they never would have wanted just because it is at a reduced price for a while.

Jeez, the JJ Abrams Lens Flare effect even applies to old, pre-JJ TNG packaging?

One more series to go and then they'll no doubt do the collection set. That's what I've been holding out for. :p

Spacefighter, yes, DVDs are good enough, but Blu-Ray is better. The space on the discs is bigger, so they can fit more episodes onto a disc and less discs into a set so you can utilise more shelf space. Also, the picture is better. There's still nothing wrong with DVDs, I have plenty of them. However, there seems little point these days to produce DVDs. By time you've compressed your product enough to fit onto a DVD, you may as well have shot it in Standard Definition anyway. It wouldn't make sense to remaster a show like this and stick it on DVD. If you don't have/want a BR player, you'd be better streaming anyway.

Hopefully they'll be moving onto DS9 next year.

As of right now, there are no plans to remaster DS9 or Voyager after TNG.

I'd be surprised if they didn't do DS9. It pains me to admit it, but it seems to be more popular than TNG and certainly more so than Voyager.

LOL In what universe do you live in? I guess all those DS9 movies they made show how popular it was, hah.

Not to mention how they had to introduce the Jem'Hadar at the end of the second season just to breathe some life into the series. Then they added Michael Dorn reprising his role as Worf for the fourth season, just to try and get some of those TNG fans watching. Plus, they never had to fight a single war on TNG just to keep people watching, yet DS9 had them fighting everybody from the Klingons to the Dominion.

For popularity, TNG is at least as popular as TOS, maybe even a little more so. DS9 and Voyager are slightly above Enterprise as far as popularity, but they trail TNG by a lot.

surprising, i would have thought that better cgi and more wars would make ds9 more popular not less. i for one would rather see some battles in it.

Well, big battles were never a part of Star Trek under Gene Roddenberry's tenure as series head on TOS and TNG. A lot of Trek fans realize that big battles aren't what it's all about. His vision for Star Trek was to be about people exploring the galaxy and expanding humanity's knowledge and bettering themselves and the rest of humanity. The problem faced by DS9 was this: how do you explore space in a space station? So, they basically needed a war or two to keep the series exciting, where TNG never needed that.

Having said that, there are people who like the battles. The Wrath of Khan is probably the most popular of the TOS films and it has more ship-to-ship combat than any other of those films. And, the big wars were done on DS9 to attract fans, which they did, so there is something to be said for that kind of show. I think the big battles on DS9 were gorgeous and I truly enjoy them, especially considering how low quality (by today's standards) a lot of those ships were and the hardware they had to use. They did an amazing job with what they had to work with. Battles of that scale wouldn't have been possible back in the TNG days, because they didn't have the CGI to make it so. (see what I did there?) I actually really enjoy DS9 as a series, but some of their best episodes are the ones where they're either fighting the Dominion or the Klingons, either in space or on the ground.

Although, there is a bonus feature with TNG S3 blu-ray, showcasing some CGI from the late 80's and considering the time, it looks amazing.

But from a practical standpoint at the time, it just wasn't there.

Didn't they do a lot of their planets CGI? By today's standards, they're definitely not very good. However, for late '80s, early '90s, they are pretty fantastic.

    On and off.

You could really tell what planets were CGI and what were matte paintings.

I think the remastering has used some of the original matte paintings that stood up well, Max Gabl punches them up a bit, but most of the planets have been completely redone using CGI, so they don't look so similar.

I must say, they look phenomenal.

You'd think they'd have punched up the Enterprise' explosion a bit more, it just looks like a bit-for-bit copy (even the original stock explosion element) from the original. Which i always thought looked incredibly fake. Having said that, they may have stuck to that one because of it's peculiar use of exploding then reversing as opposed to the traditional kablewy only.
