Welcome to the SFM Instructors Q&A

Here you can ask for solutions to problems regarding your 3D, 2D applications, guidance on techniques or approaches to making digital artwork. We have a dedicated team of specialists - the Sensei - who try to answer as many questions as possible. Also many members spare their valuable time to share their vast amounts of knowledge and experience.

Please read our Do's and Don'ts guide to make sure you are posting in the right place, and asking in the right way; this will ensure that your problem is dealt with as effectively and as quickly as possible, thank you.

Do

- Make sure you're asking in the right place, this is not a modelling request forum, nor is it a place to ask for help with your RPG or movie, e.g. I need modellers, texture artists, models, etc - we have a separate area for that.

- Use our search facility first, the question may have already been asked. Also, make sure you have read the manual and used Google to search for any relevant tutorials. People will be more willing to help you if they can see you've put in the effort yourself.

- Include your Application (eg: MAX, LW, etc...) in your thread title so people can easily see which posts they can help with, 3D apps being so complex that most of us only specialise in one or two, also include as much other relevant information as you can.

If you are having specific problems with a renderer for example, it should be fomatted something like this: "Maya - Mental Ray Crashes at rendertime." Some questions however might not be app specific so this isn't always necessary. You will hopefully know if your question is something specific to do with a particular app or something more general.

If in doubt, include it anyway.

- Post screenshots illustrating your problem, a picture is worth a thousand words, but dont forget the words either.

- Help others where you can, even beginners can help other beginners.

Don't

- Ask vague questions or expect anyone to teach you how to make an entire scene. Thats the kind of thing that tutorials are for, often any scene you want to make will already have all its aspects covered in different tutorials, so be as specific as possible.

- Multipost, either in here or in other areas, your question will be answered if people can help you.

- Forget to say "Thank you for the help" or otherwise show your appreciation for the kindness of others, nobody here is paid to help you, and we don't have to, its the least you can do in return.

Thats it, thanks for taking the time to read this guide, enjoy your stay and try to be as polite, friendly and helpful as possible. I'm sure I speak for the entire staff when I say YOU are the people who make this board what it is.

All the best,

SFM Sensei and Staff.

I havent been on this site in ages, and now that I'm back I seem to be a little lost. I remember there was a gallery category menu somewhere that had some of the following choices: Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Original Artwork, Other scifi (Babylon 5, SAtar Craft, etc...), real world, maybe something else. I cant seem to find it and the coresponding librarys of images anywhere!! :( Am I mistaken and thinking of another site? Has the site changed and gotten rid of that feature? The login I'm using was made in 2007, I probably havent visited this site in 2+ years at least so anything is possible.

    Thanks!

What hasn't happened... hardware problems, software vulnerabilities, script kiddies with a chip on their shoulder and bad taste in music...
