Yeah, they did kind of botch the bridge set when they moved the placement of the lifts in TUC. That change might work if the bridge was set a little further back so the rear half of it was no longer directly under the exterior dome and the turbo lift cars actually moved horizontally behind the bridge for a short space before reaching the vertical tube to the lower decks, but that's just my fanboy rationalization. The fact of the matter is that they were no loger paying attention to such details by the time TUC was in production, which is too bad because the model-makers went to great lengths to match certain exterior details on the ship with corresponding interior sets when they started making the movies.
*cough* they cared about how it looks onscreen and Coolness Factor. Only a [relative] minority of people would get upset that the "internal structure" is being messed with; fact is, when they rebuilt the brige for VI, they obviously also gutted the whole primary hull and neck so they could move the turbolift tubes by 2.5 meters.
    Duh! :p

Fantastic job, however there is one glaring mistake that jumps out at me - the tread pattern of each wild section should be oriented to that section, not the axis of the bridge overall. That said, this is an amazingly well modeled set (one that even in my heyday I was too lazy to do).

Yeah, he's right. Now since you were so kind as to build the set, maybe you'd shoot off one or 2 'hero' renders for a nice wallpaper? :thumb:
    cheers!

that's not optimising then is it - nothing wrong with optimising

I'm not one of these people that's like "rarrrr never release!!!1" but when people come into a gallery thread and ask for something to be released it makes me uncomfortable, the author should only release if they feel like it and not be pressured into anything

You're right, there's nothing wrong with optimizing...when it works. I was merely pointing out that sometimes it doesn't work as well as one might like. I generally prefer working with models that aren't optimized (hence my "optimize schmoptimize" joke) because I've found it doesn't always produce the desired effect.

Also, I wasn't pressuring BCL to do anything. I simply wanted to tell him that I'd be interested in knowing IF he was planning to release it. If he chooses not to, fine by me. He mentioned above that he "certainly pondered" releasing it, but still has work to do before he gives it serious consideration. His response answered my query adequately and politely (and thank you for that, BCL; I appreciate it). Furthermore, I stated in my initial post that asking whether a modeller is planning a public release is something I resist doing, but in this case I was impressed enough with his work to make an exception. Your personal comfort level regarding my question really doesn't concern me, IRML, but just to make so you don't lose any sleep over it let me assure you that I will never ask if you plan to publicly release any of your work. The last thing I would ever want to do is pressure you unnecessarily.

Just noticed another error: the steps down from the front sides of the bridge into the helm/nav area are incorrect. I don't seem to have a good shot of them anywhere, but they should be thin metal steps; you can see the corner of one here:

They're similar to the ones you can see in the right side of this pic, but the vertical parts holding them up are different:

    [edit]

Just read that you did those steps that way deliberately, so ignore this post. ;-)

One thing I'd love to see is a Star Trek IV version of this set:

You might also find this useful - I was able to extrapolate a lot of dimensions from what was already marked in this cross-section of the other wall:

I realize that's a bit late in the game here, but I'll post it in case you ever decide to do a rebuild, as well as for anyone else with the balls to take on this set. ;-) For the curious, this was as far as I ever got with that set (I gave up when I realized how many ****ing buttons there were):

where does that big "step" between the command panel and the viewerscreen come from, don't notice it in the movie?

That's actually in the book "Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise". It's in the floor-plan labeled as an access hatch or something. I'm not sure if it's in the film though, might have been an addition just for the book. But I thought it looked cool and added balance to the empty space there.

It's an emergency egress hatch. I don't believe it actually was in the film sets, however something like it did appear in some later bridge sets (I believe the Sovereign class bridge has one, as did the Equinox, IIRC).

No it wasn't in the movie, that's why I asked :)

Benjamin Litteer (BCL323) had an untimely death last year, which I found out after I Google'd him to try and find more artwork from him. This bridge replica is really one of a kind, and haven't seen anything like it. It's like a blueprint that took on depth and color. It wouldn't be an overstatement to say it's the very bridge on which Star Trek made a name for itself in The Wrath of Khan.

Very impressive work. I regret that I could not tell him that myself.

I am very sorry to hear of his passing.

Perhaps he is debating the time honored Klingons vs. Starfleet with my brother as we used to do.

    We are all Star-stuff.
