So I just got done watching a bunch of WWII movies, Including Red Tails. And I had an Idea, what if Starfleet had advanced bombers that also had manned offensive and defensive weapons, My idea is that Starfleet in in a Galactic war. Meaning everyone is fighting The borg lead the Axis, and The federation leads the allies. And what if there are several planets where ground and Air attacks are required to gain a foothold on the planet. Say planetary bombardment is not an option, and you need to clear a path for ground troops, and also taking out valuable resources of the enemy.
Well I want to model those flying fortesses and escorts, but I need ideas.. any suggestions would help. Thanks!
Generally, I like the overall idea, just that the Borg would be pretty much the only member of the Axis, they'd never ally themselves with anything not Borg. Same goes for Species 8472. The Dominion would annex others, by "allying" themselves with it and taking over, like they did with the Cardassians.
We've seen very little about ground combat so far. We saw the Siege of AR-558, though that was only a bunch of marines and officers against 2 batallions of Jem'Hadar footsoldiers. No tanks, no bikes, no nothing. I enjoyed the game Star Trek: New Worlds, which attempted to improve on that, but set almost a century before the Dominion War.
Regarding your idea: I think that bombardment itself will always be done by the orbiting capital ships. Seeing how precise the Ent-D was able to shot planetary locations during some episode (they needed to heat up the planets core or something like that), I'd think they're quite capable of even shooting a photon torpedo at a tank in a dense city. And smaller vessels, like the Defiant or Norway classes, or even the Intrepid and Nova classes, are desinged for atmospheric actions, so figure about their fighters, the Peregrine, or the Runabouts. They could easily fit the role of a multi-purpose fighter/bomber & troop dropship.
What Star Trek really needs are navy vessels, and ground force vehicles...
No, Navy vessels are force extenders the same as bombers and other aircraft. Once you can do strikes from orbit surface ships are just sitting ducks. Troop transport vehicles, they're called shuttles.
Maybe, but what if the capital ships are mainly focussed on dealing with orbital installations or attempts of recapture? Thus cannot provide full support, only a stray shot here and there to reat down a defence post or a weapon installation?
Tho, I think you're right, naval warfare is not likely there anymore. We're land-based beings, so our main efforts would be focussed on land, and the few sea-based facilities/stations/etc could easily be captured by away-teams of soldiers...
So just tanks, artillery, scouter-bikes, humvees (the Argo was the most military-themed vehicle, being sort of a jeep/buggy mix).
I think the old Playstation 2 game, Star Trek: Invasion tried to do something like this by having a AâFlying FortressAâ type carrier with an on-board compliment of fighters and point-defense turrets. I believe it was called the USS Typhon. Put that into Google Images and youAâll immediately see the ship IAâm talking about.
