Accutrans 3d does a better job than native lightwave in my experience, its fully functional shareware, and a very useful item in your armoury.
Also the best format to export to seems to be obj, (at least in native lightwave export) since it preserves texture coordinates and basic material properties (texture assignments, diffuse specular etc settings)

I'm having no luck with Accutrans... and I've tried the Deep Exploration demo, poly's still get crumpled, etc.

Just be warned, the lightwave exporters don't seem to have many options (not like the max exporter), so if it comes out alright, great, if it doesn't, there isn't much you can do

If not, I'll take up Lightwave... lol.

When I do cross conversions, I usually split the model into layers and export them piece by piece. Typically Max models have bigger problems because 3DS doesn't understand some tools like "mirror geometry". But the simplest approach is the best, lw -> 3ds -> max, and clean it up yourself as you go.
That's what I thought, too, but at least when importing the result in Max, OBJ seemed to work best. FBX and Collada both didn't preserve surfaces/materials, and I think one of them even discarded the UVs - while obj keeps at least basic material properties and texture assignments and UVs intact.
But I'm not a LW user and I might not have found the magic switch that makes FBX and DAE work better :P And I only tested it on two models.

Yes, it does. I've used Blender to import up to (I think) LW8 or 9 meshes and export them to .obj format.
i;ve tried the trial for lightwave, it was hard to get used to the UI. im used to max, and im sticking with max 9 as long as im stuck with this laptop

I dunno, last time i tried conversions was LW 8.1
