3DS MAX 2011 - Shift Select

Hi,

As I understand there's suppose to be an option to use the shift key to select all the faces/edges/polygons in the same row as the one selected...
For some reason I can't get this to work at all, has anyone succeeded doing this simple thing and willing to explain?

Maybe something is screwed with my version of max?

    I've seen this and there's the problem, I'm doing the exact same thing and it won't work
