Hi,
Trying to learn Blender and just have a simple question for the moment. Is there any way to change the default material that gets applied when an object is created? I would like to just have a nice simple clay render type material be the default. It would be easier to "read" in quick renders of a work in progress.
Clay as in the color of Clay? I'll just walk you through materials so you can do what you want.
First of all, you need to add a material (if you don't have one already). Here's a shot of the buttons bar:
The sphere on the left group is everything material related, so click on that. The sphere on the right group is specifically the material of the object (The light bulb is for the properties of lamps, the camo is for textures, the radiation is for radiosity, and the globe is for the background AKA world).
If you don't have a material, click add new:
Once you do that, you should see this panel:
On the tab that says material, adjust the R, G, and B sliders to get the desired color. You can also make it less shiny by adjusting the reflectivity and specularity in the shaders tab. One more important thing is the texture, you can add one by going to the aforementioned camouflage colored button.

I don't think it's possible.
