Chamfering Problem in Max

I'm having an issue with some edges chamfering properly and it causes some weird smoothing issues when I try to fix it. I don't know if it's just something simple I'm missing of if it's more complicated. I've attached two images: the first shows what happens right after I chamfer the edges and the second shows the pinching that happens with turbosmooth applied at 2 iterations.

chamfers only work predictably on certain forms of geometry, and when you apply them in certain ways. I've attached a pic of how it should look. the grey lines are extra lines you might want to add to control the smoothing and/or shading better.

in order to achieve this, you should chamfer the vertical lines first, the the horizontal. what you have is a result of trying to do both at once. anyway, try experimenting with different lines to get the best results from your chamfer the 'cut' tool will help you to do this and also clean up any resulting problems.
