Look for tutorials on unwrapping and your 3d application as you will need to unwrap the model before you texture it unless you are using purely procedural textures. Once you have managed to unwrap the model look for Photoshop/PSP/GIMP tutorials on how to make panel-based and metal textures. That should give you a solid starting point

Don't worry about 3D Game; it's the perfect book to learn how to get some nice textures in photoshop!

even if you're gonna use procedural mapping, you're still gonna need to do at least a basic unwrap. Otherwise, the maps will be "stretched"
