Can anyone tell me how to create exhaust/thruster effects for spaceships in 3ds max or Maya? If there are some good tutorials out there you can recommend that would be great.
thanks

.... exhaust/thruster effects for spaceships in 3ds max or Maya?

Check out volumelight in manual for both Max and Maya, it will give you the tools that you need for making most cool effects that does not include fluid type of exhausts.

if you want something like the 1st picture, try the settings in the 2nd picture. (play with some of the values, depends on size of the scene and everything).
I think I learned this method from you Larsen :D

Lights, glows, volume lights and/or combustion are the way to go for the different kind of engine effects. You can also use particles if you want sparks

i would have thought extruding a copy of the engine muzzle shape and applying effects to that would work too, but volumetrics seems to be the preferred method.
