3d mask maps for space ship window

I remember seeing a tutorial someplace for using mask or maps or they may have been called apha mask or maps to create windows on a space station or something of that nature . does anyone know where I could find that? an example would be if you look at something like deep space nine space station you see little windows some of them have lights on in them others don't. any help is appeciated thanks.
