Mutara Nebula Effect...

Anyone know how this effect might've been created?



The Okuda's told that they don't know for sure, but possibly "but it looks like projected light, reflected off of warped/slightly wrinkled sheets of shiny metal or plastic. The reflected light is bounced onto a white wall in a dark room, and you film the reflected light pattern as you flex the sheet very slightly."

I gave that idea a try, but didn't get very satisfying results...
