Fist I draw out blueprints, then make a general form for the main body. Since the top and bottom are going to be vac formed from the same shape, I only need to make one half.
Then I vac form 1/8" styrene, twice.
After cutting the shapes free.
Fit together.
More parts. Still using the vac former to make the clear canopy.
That's friggin' sweet. I love the concept A-Wing. Too bad they couldn't do blue markings on the movie miniatures back then because of the blue screen filming. Your model looks like it's perfectly built and detailed. I'm looking forward to the painted version. Also, thanks for adding the Coke cans for scale.
"And then, I made a cockpit." I feel like I've just looked at one of those 'how to draw' things, where there's a bunch of random circles and squiggles in one frame, and then a complete, finished drawing in the next, with the words, "And finish!"
The details on this model look amazing! Forgive my Star Wars ignorance, but is there any difference between this and the final A-Wing besides the colors?

Besides the fins and cockpit canopy being different, there are a bunch of little things. The nose on the studio model has a split in it, the nose of the concept doesn't. The fuselage itself is slightly more rounded on the studio model and the opening where the lasers are mounted is slightly smaller and a different shape. The paneling on the fuselage is different as well. Also, the laser cannons and other detail bits are different, but that's mostly due to kitbashing.
Here are some images of the actual A-Wing filming miniature, you can compare them against the drawing and REL777's model to see the differences.
Here's some of the differences between this version and the movie version. The movie version hull is on the far left in this picture, and on the right is the Ralph McQuarrie concept X Wing I built.
It's roughly twice the size as the movie version, and the hull is a completely different shape. They're so close in profile though that they look the same.
It's amazing the size difference between the concept and the final movie ship. I've always liked the A-wings because they're small and sporty looking. Making them bigger seems wrong somehow. (but I still love your model ) That concept X-wing is sweet also.

I think most of us here couldn't match the concept as well as that in CG let alone a real model
Looks Excellent sir! thats one thing i couldn't get good at..Scratchbuilding/kit bashing... good thing I do 3D now
Seriously nice work, here.
Superficially they are pretty similar. The movie version has slightly different rudders/exhausts and a slightly more streamlined rear cockpit fairing.

I'm starting on the paint.

Check out this composite someone did.
Unfortunately the B-Wing didn't start out as beautiful:
BTW: Someone later retconned that one into this.
