3d design autocad tips : How to Change Dimension Text in AutoCAD

While doing some visitor tracking in this CAD blog, I came across with a search query A“how to change dimension textA” in this siteA’s referral url. Which makes me wonder, what does the searcher really need to know, when he/she makes that search. Is the searcher wants to change the Text content of the dimension or was he/she wants to change te properties of the text in the dimension?

Anyway, changing dimension text is easy. The simplest way to do it is to use the command DDEDIT or ED in shortcut form when you type it at the command prompt. Then edit the dimension text, just like the way you edit the regular text in your drawing. That is only if you want to replace the content of dimension text. But if you want to change the location of dimension text, or rotate the dimension text from itA’s original position. You can use the command DIMEDIT or in the dimension toolbar click the Dimension Edit icon (fig.1). Then a list of options will appear at the command prompt, asking you what will you do next.

The list of options are, Home, New, Rotate, and Oblique (fig.2). the Home options is for, if you want your dimension text be back to its orginal position. The New option is for, if you to replace your dimension text with a new set of text. While the Rotate option is for, if you want rotate your dimension text in any angle you want (fig.3). And the Oblique options is for, slanting your dimension or if you want your dimension to be position at an angle


You can also move the dimension text to the right, left or center along the dimension line or to any position outside extension lines (fig.4). A quick and simple way to do this is by using GRIPS. Alternatively you can also use the DIMTEDIT command or at the command prompt, type DIM, then TE, then select the dimension you want to edit.
