Photoshop Blending help

Good afternoon, i have just started to use Photoshop and i am learning, however i have hit a snag that i can't work out for myself...
I know it much be there but the help file is... well unhelpful!
What i want to do is take a layer and make the edge/s fall off in to a transparent state. Can anyone help me with this as it is starting to annoy me...

Select the area around your image (magic wand, or select a rectangle and CTRL+Shift+I), then go to Select -> Modify -> Feather, (I used 10 pixel radius for this) and delete a couple of times until it looks decent.
