Most Common 3D Format?

TralfazTralfaz412 Posts: 846Member
I was wondering what the most common or most used 3D format is? I tried searching the forum, but didn't really find any answer to this.

I've been uploading some models in the Cinema 4D (.c4d) format, but am wondering if there is a more widely accepted format or does it even matter?

Thanks in advance...
Al

OBJ seems to be fairly popular from what I've seen.

yeah obj is but it's not something you really want to upload models in

collada is supposed to be the new thing

    Thanks for the info folks.

I've been doing some reading on Collada this morning. Is this something that all the 3D apps support? I know Blender has some scripts for Collada, but was wondering about other apps.

Cinema supports it, I'm not sure how well lightwave does at the moment, but I think I read on NewTek's blurb that CORE's format will basically be an extended version of collada. No idea about the others though.

As long as your model does not contain advanced stuff like bones or the like i'd claim OBJ is the most supported format (even though it might not be the 'best' format). so if your aiming for maximum compatibility this would be the choice.

fbx, if you have to pass it to other autodesk products.
    this format is awsome.
keeping bones, blendshapes morphers and animation. genial.

Also OBJ might need specific options to import right in specific apps.

OBJ works across most 3D programs and retains UV maps.
