texturing question

When creating a texture via a application like Photoshop or Paitshp Pro, is there a particular graphics format that is better. I know that certain games reguire certain formats (e.g., bmp, tga, ect) but I was wonder which format, if any, is better to create the orgainal texture in prior to conversion.

as lossless as possible - a jpeg will use up the same amount of memory when rendering as the equivalent bitmap would, the advantage of the jpeg is that the textures will take up less space on your hard disk, the disadvantage is that you'll get compression noise that'll spoil the textures

I personally go for quality and let it take up a bit more space on the drive, I use PNGs and bitmaps normally, most hard disks will cope with people saving their textures as bitmaps now anyway :p
