Ok, I've been out of the 3d loop for a little while and I'm looking to start modeling again, however funds are fairly limited so I'm looking at getting Lightwave 9 as a cheaper alternative to the latest release of 3DS Max.
How big are the differences between the two programs and how hard it it to convert my old max models to Lightwave?
to convert max models to LW is a bit of a task, but it really depends on how you go about converting. The smartest method involved breaking your original models down into smaller groups and saving each individual group as a 3ds, then you can import them all into LW modeller and recombine them into the original mesh, WITHOUT coordinate errors. Then all you have to do is reapply textures.
LW is a lot simpler then Max to use because modeller and animator are seperate, so you never hit the wrong thing accidentally and bugger up what you're working on by changing keyframes, etc...
