Armageddon

I don't know if this has been posted before anywhere, but I was wondering if anyone had even the slightest idea of how to make a shockwave that covers the planet and melts away the clouds and changes the lush green land into fire. An example would be from the movie Armageddon. I already have a planet I made. Screenshots below from the movie Armageddon. Any help would be much appreciated.

i'm pretty sure pete drapers site, xenomorphic.com has a tutorial that might help with the impact. for changing one material into another you coudl try a blend material, with earth in one slot and the burned earth in the other, then perhaps you could animate a gradient or something to transition them on the globe.

It is in your max tutorial or sample directory, look for moon impact.

Saw it somewhere, but attached the max 3 version, works with chopping the spheres. Could also use, volume select modifier, and delete mesh modifier, to perform the task.
