3ds Max rendering question...

If I render to elements (picking, say, uh, diffuse and lighting/shadow/GI), will Max cough up a composited pic that looks normal AND the two element pics or just the two element pics?
I'm asking because I can see some 500k to 1mil poly models needing to be rendered within the next 6 months or so (given the rate my skills and knowledge are increasing) and I'm pretty darn sure that my computer will call the union and ask about striking if I try and get it to do anything like that all at once.
Okay, waitaminute...how 'bout this question instead?: If I have a pair of 1.8ghz Xeons on my motherboard (32bit) and 2gigs of RAM and I'm not doing anything else with my computer while she's rendering, what is the standard way of going about rendering big ole' huge stuff?
is that too big of a question?
