  • California Class from The Lower Decks

Good start. Which season model are you following? S2 seemed to have the most close ups for reference of the panelling and whatnot.
    Thanks!
I'm using reference pics from all three seasons. I find that the new model they used for season 3 really upped the detail. It really lends a greater feeling of reality to the design.
Now I'm assembling a board on PureRef with details used on Galaxy and Sovereign hulls to find inspiration to flesh out the design.

This project is intended to present an interpretation of the California-class depicted on The Lower Decks.

My intent is to model it in a more realistic fashion, rather than as it is depicted on the show. In an interview, series showrunner Mike McMahan indicated that the California-class would have originated around season four or five for the TNG-era so that's where I'll try to draw inspiration.

I intend to take a few liberties while trying to remain true to the spirit of the design.

I'm quite rusty with Blender so I'm using this as an opportunity to brush up on all of the changes that have taken place since 2.7x. I'm just about done roughing in the design. Next, I will begin tweaking the details to allow for greater 'realism' in the design.

On July 15, 2014 I decided to resume my old hobby of 3D modeling. I had pursued 3D many years before but I had fallen out of practice. I have long been intrigued by the Blender 3D software suite so I embarked on my first project.

Learning Blender has been an unspeakably challenging project. It's power is evident but the interface is both subtle and complex.

It is obvious by my choice of subject that Star Trek is something meaningful to me. Some of my earliest memories are of watching the original series as reruns. The vision of a distant future filled with exotic creatures, alien worlds and technological wonders have fueled the imaginations of millions since the first series aired.

It's impossible to count the number of lives who's courses were steered by the many incarnations of Star Trek. Countless doctors, engineers, and scientists credit the adventures of the Enterprise crew for inspiring them to pursue their life's vocation.

Working evenings, weekends, and holidays, I've spent hundreds of hours on this project. As the model started taking shape, I began wondering how best to unveil the production.

On February 27, 2015 I realized what needed to be done.
