Another shot of my Nightfire WIP (I REALLY need to get around doing the hull grids and windows already - but college is a priority atm).

  • NC course short animation submission

    Hey everyone.
This is a little animation I did for my college course (I posted the initial one I did, along with the 'finished' one).

It was supposed to be something 'basic' and brief (about 30 seconds), so I decided to combine a few things I did in my youth (display re-rendered in 720p) and used Nico's Galaxy class mesh to render out a Warp jump scene using Paul Houseman music I have (alongside other older files).

This was initially a rush job, hence why the first animation is missing bits, but it ensured me a pass regardless (its a basic course really - sort of a prelude to a real HND course and no one was expected to do something like this).

    Animation1 (rush job) :

I reworked the animation though and added some bits and pieces (Warp field for Intro, LCARS interface for the display) along with a differently animated camera around the Galaxy class.

    Animation 2 ('finished' - supposedly) :

Also, bear in mind I hadn't had a chance to render any decent animations in YEARS... so this is sort of a 'warm-up' for me.
    Hope you like

    Agreed.
    Nicely done thus far.
Which modeling software are you using?
    Cinema4D or something else?

  • USS Nightfire Poster

Hey guys, so I had a bit of spare time and decided to create a poster style image using the USS Nightire WIP mesh I made.

  • Refit Uss Voyager

My reaction to this model is... mixed.
The nacelle pylons could be larger, and nacelles themselves perhaps a bit longer on the aft section.
Not a fan of bussard collectors though (or the added impulse engines - seems to me that Starfleet wouldn't necessarily remove the phaser strips from that area to add impulse engines (which are available on the pylons anyway

  • Flat Eric's Voyager 'beauty shot'

For some strange reason, I was looking over at some of the shots of Voyager online and stumbled onto the calendar image that had the ship in this position.
I tried matching it as closely as possible and did a few modifications on the materials, as well as complete lighting overhaul.
Flat Eric, your mesh is great, but the glossiness levels on the ship were a proverbial eyesore that I had to modify.

Anyway... I did the 1280x800 resolution shot... didn't feel like doing the 1080p as my laptop is quite old, and my resolution is limited to 1280x800 as well - a bit short-sighted I know... but still.
    :D

EDIT: Played around with the mesh a bit more (just couldn't let it go). Hope you enjoy it. I also did a 1200p version.

EDIT 1: UPDATED thread - made a new image.

    Very nice!

    Thank you.
Was experimenting more with 'non-destructive editing' in Photoshop.
    :-)

Oh and that's Quantum Slipstream version 2 (10 000 Lightyears per minute - same version as VOY used in 'Timeless' episode).

  • Resistance is not futile!

    Very nice work.
Lighting and effects work pretty well here.
    The angle is certainly interesting.
One would think the Borg cube would obstruct the Enterprise - D being hit by the main light source, but that could easily be the perspective.

@evil_genius_180 ... Your question, if non humanoid aliens would even want to serve in Starfleet or maybe if they’d feel discriminated in a “Homo Sapiens only club” would actually make for a great plot, especially in an animated series.

After watching all of Stargate recently, I really liked, how they handled the Universe. There was a good reason, why pretty much everyone looked Human, since they mostly were displaced humans. Once they gout out more in SG:U they hat actual alien looking aliens. Now granted, they weren’t always consistent with that idea, but it really works.

It’s pretty much what they tried in TNG Season 7 but it doesn’t really work too well as a Retcon, that’s never really explored. I like that episode anyways. I also really miss having Episodes of something and having 20+ Episode Seasons 😅

I was under the impression that Starfleet and the Federation do not discriminate against species that look non-humanoid (and that on a Federation star-ship, that kind of behavior would essentially be unheard of).
It may be a bit tougher to find non-humanoid alien species that would want or could serve in the same environment as humanoid species... but, I doubt it would be impossible.

What bugged me about DS9 is how Quark tried telling Odo that solids are all alike and that they feel more comfortable around creatures/aliens that look similarly (aka, bipedal and humanoid)... but that went against everything that was established of the Federation and Starfleet... fortunately, Quark was a Ferengi, so his species didn't have same values as the Federation, so he was probably talking rubbish (certainly not something that would be applicable to the Federation at large).

The pocket books (non-canon) mentioned that there were a few Horta who served in Starfleet... would be nice to see the animated series using non-humanoid species.
Heck, they could even use dolphins (as the concept was there back for the Enterprise-D) and use them as another sentient species (non-Human animals ARE sentient after all, so its fairly obvious that Humanity would be able to communicate with them by that point easily).

I also doubt that Starfleet would apply same measures/tests to every single species for their acceptance into service.

Perhaps we could see some Gorn... Xindi insectoids too.

There are numerous options to consider... but to be fair, we know very little about this show, and given what the 'snippets' thus far portrayed, it may not indicate they would go for the more 'serious' route.
