  • CyberMonkey's Star Wars stuff

Thought I'd update this post. I took a break from modelling and decided to move into some animation and compositing stuff. Inspired by Howard Days amazing recreation of the original Star Wars look I set out to do some experimenting as well.
My first start was to take Ansels amazing Star Destroyer model and set it up in Arnold, adding some basic grunge textures and doing some shader stuff to bring out the edges and creases. I then I used Red Giant film emulation to get most of the way to the original film negative look, images in the spoilers (to not clutter the post).

Also did the same thing to the Acclamator class, also found on SciFi 3D.

There is still room for improvement, the engines for example use emission from a shader, which is quite bad in terms of getting clean result, for actual good renderings I'll exchange those with mesh lights.

I've also been working on an animation, recreating the intro shot of Return of the Jedi, it is 4 hours into rendering as I write this, so should be done in 10 hours or so :p

But I did do a comp test yesterday and while Howard still has the crown on the look, I think I'm getting close!

    Hello everyone!
New to this site (as a member) and new to 3D modelling. My background is in visual effects and this year I decided to properly learn 3D modelling.
I might have bit off more than I can chew but for the past couple days I've been trying my hands on one of my all time favourite ship designs, the Hammerhead class cruiser. So far I've done the major panels on the head and parts of the body. Now I dont think I'll be able to pull of some of the crazy good panelling that gets posted here, but hope I can add much more detail with bump/displacement maps.
Also so far I've been working with the Maya smoothing in mind, beveling the edges without a chamfer to get (smooth) hard edges. Not sure if this is the way to go, or how others do it so some wisdom is appreciated^^
Just for the thumbnail, move along...

Alright, put the video together now, all in all it took more than 20 hours to render, ignore the beginning for now, gotta smooth that out and still add a planet in the distance. I've also made a simple Lut of my grade if anyone wants to play around with it, I advise to use curves before the lut since it'll wash out the whites for that film look, hope you find it useful somehow :)

Also Youtube just destroyed the quality, gonna try uploading with a different codec once I get to the final stage.
