Oh, I know that Close Encounters has more advanced effects and that they spent $11million making Star Wars, I was just commenting on how impressive it is that they were able to create an entire galaxy and make it look believable on that budget. George Lucas was one of the first to comment on some of the "cheaper" things they had to do effects wise to get the movie done in that budget.
2001 cost only $10.5million (estimated) to make. That movie was a special effects spectacular. Planet of the Apes is another big Sci-Fi film from '68, and it cost less than $6million. (they made a lot of ape masks for that film)
I sometimes wonder how, in a relatively short amount of time, they went from numbers like those to a few hundred million for a big special effects movie. You can't say it's all inflation. Of course, back then, they also didn't feel the need to "touch up" every single scene, like they seem to need to do these days, even on scenes that don't need it.
Update: started placing a few engine section details - I'm kind of jumping around a bit to get a feel for how detailing should flow on certain areas of the ship.

No, it sure doesn't. Plus, it's used in places where it really isn't necessary.

I suppose that depends where Hollywood is outsourcing to this month...
Anyway, enough of this off-topicness, update looks good. Looking forward to seeing how this design pans out.

Just a slight update.
Love the detailing and texturing.
Fits right in that universe.
