For a change, one of my 2D sketches fell into "sci-fi" territory, so I thought I'd drop the WIP here.

That's a good likeness to Robert Downey Jr., but the head seems a tad on the big side. Or is that intentional?
  • ArmondikovArmondikov0 Posts: 0Member
Yeah, it's kind of the cartoony effect, but I don't get that much practice sticking the heads onto bodies.

Yeah, I thought you may have been going for that cartoon look.

It's kinda the thing that I've side-stepped into in the last year or so, with varying degrees of success:

They tend to start looking a little better once the colour gets on there:

Capaldi, Joss Whedon and I'm guessing Nathan Fillion.

Always reassuring to know that they're recognisable, especially when I'm still just learning this stuff!

Very cool, the Capaldi, Whedon and the 'F**CK YOU' guy (can't remember the actor's name off the top of my head) are particularly good.

    Ah, caricatures. Cool stuff. :thumb:

I recognized a couple of them, but I don't think it's as much a matter of your abilities as it is familiarity with what the people look like. Jonathan Banks was the one I recognized easily. I was thinking the Joss Whedon caricature looked familiar, but I couldn't put a face with the name. ;) Peter Capaldi is somebody I've never seen in anything, despite his pretty long list of credits on IMDb. I only found him because of Vortex's post.

Jonathan Banks. I always remember his face and stuff I've seen him in, but I'm bad with names, so I just looked up Beverly Hills Cop on IMDb. ;)

Specifically, Mike from Breaking Bad. With the pixellation being a direct reference: http://s9.postimg.org/4kg98ltun/image.png

I've never seen that show, but I recognize the actor. He's been in so many things over the years.

Now we get to what I consider the interesting bit:

I think this is going to turn into a 12+ hour job. :argh:

Looking really good. I like the way you're doing the metal material and fire effects. :thumb:

As a point of pride, I should note this is all done in MyPaint - which is a pretty "dumb" piece of painting software. So all those effects are dabbed and smudged in manually rather than with something automated like a specialist Photoshop brush.

The armor is looking slick. :thumb:

I find that hair has become a perfect superposition of theraputic and a complete-pain-in-the-arse.

I would call it finished now, all that's left is to wait a day or so and look at it again, when I'll definitely see something beyond terrible about it.

Iron Man came out great. Awesome work on the hair. :thumb:

I'm looking forward to seeing Thor come together like that. :)

It's a bit of a scribble at the moment.

Thor sort-of slipped onto the back burner. I'll pick it up again later today. Hopefully. Because lazy and all that.

But I did do this recently and thought it might be worth showing off.

Damn, dude. That almost looks like a photo.

Yeah, almost of course. My weakness is still hair. I can do a decent enough job when it just needs to be "good", but I'm still falling short of photoreal. Just for comparison, this is where I was in January:

    chloe_grace_moretz_by_armondikov-d8e8ybj.png

But this is current (posted mainly for personal catharsis, aka "Reasons") where I'm trying to pay a bit more attention to where the strays go, and (though it's not visible in this crop) where the hair meets head, which you can probably tell is a major issue with Mila Kunis up there:

Awesome work! Really liking the style you're using, and your hair work is definitely improving each time.

Pull up a seat on the header ;)
