I recall Syd Mead somewhere dissing this design as being too spindly, his own design for this vehicle being mostly rejected, but I think they (Cameron and Cobb) got the tone of the hardware just right with this design - I think Cameron kitbashed it together and Cobb worked it further and detailed it.
One i've always wanted to build, I had a very nice Halcyon kit of it back in the day so i'm pretty familiar with the layout - Looks like a great start so far.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. He was probably just mad that they kitbashed his design.
The more a look at this thing the more I think it wouldn't have a hope of working in the real world but no doubt the design is bad ass! The rotating missile pod operation is something I think would require some sort of hydraulic piston that spans its length to move it.
I'm not sure if any though went into the firing mechanism of the missiles - is it a loading mechanism or a more traditional rocket launcher system? I decided to take some inspiration from the M21 Rocket Launcher.
Haven't been able to put as much time into this as I had hoped - got some reasonable progress made in the last week or so. Spent ages trying to rig the landing grear so I can animate this thing! I've managed to get it working reasonable well with a couple of IK chains.
nice work. the design looks better in grey than in the green scheme used in the film. i notice the cockpit region is better sealed off from the cargo bay than in the movie, i guess this is a later version and they learnt their lesson!
Thanks. Cockpit is still work in progress. Seats need to be offset and rear access door added. I also want to add some panelling details and modify the engines.
Very nice work on both models, but the scale seems to be off between the two. I notice you mentioned you were going to rework the cockpit a bit. This is good as there doesn't seem to be anyway into the cockpit and the seats look quite large compared to the APC. Other than that, very well done.
Some more updates on this, pretty much done with this now. Next to do is some animation as the model is all rigged up!
-reworked the interior
-air intakes changed for a smoother shape
-reworked rear engine exhausts
-modified the front lights for angled versions - there are several references, some show this as square and some angled, I tihnk the angled version looks better.
-added more panelling details, rivets
-added some interior details in the cargo hold.
Very cool, the new nose turret is excellent and the landing gear and intakes look great. I think your biggest problem now is those huge plain slab sides as seen in your fifth image, they really need to have some details added and perhaps a slight change in shape.
Wow, that looks great. I don't know how I've missed all of these more recent updates, but I'm caught up now.
Thanks mate. I'm happy with how its turned out. Like anything I've modelled theres always more detail i could add or bits I might have done differently but like I said I'm happy with it and onto the next project which I'm trying to decide on, maybe some character modelling possibly a stormtrooper which has probably been done to death but I haven't done anything other than vehicles (apart from a T-800 Terminator head) so time for a change.
There's nothing wrong with doing something that a lot of other people have done. After all, if you've never done it, it's not been done. I know what you mean about getting a model close enough and being happy with it.
