No that was the competing format.
I never understood region lock, all the excuses for it were all bull$hit.
I doubt the bluray would have been that good seen so many blurays that were utter crap upscaled grainfests or horribly processed that it looks like a night at the movies after Fred spooged onto the projector lens.
Each day we draw closer to the end.

Today, that ship would never pass any type of censure in movies and TV. I could be wrong...but I am pretty sure of it.

Today most film makers would tell the censors to go commit a physically impossible act. Especially indies like corman. We are talking about the guy who had a woman stripped naked and raped to death by a giant maggot in 'galaxy of terror", remember?

As to getting images of the ship, corman has a rep for being a decent guy, if you go to his website and ask nidely he mnight be willing to post pics of the model used in filming.

Oh man that is probably where I am remembering it from. I have a box of those damned things somewhere. I doubt it would be cir the era but more like a showcase look back given I think mine start about 86 or so...

Yeah, the movie premiered somewhere around (Starlog) issues 35, 37, and 38. (I was selling some earlier Starlogs on eBay a while back.) In a later issue, which I no longer have, there's a picture of a side view of Nell on a stand being filmed. The back end looked a lot different from what I expected. I posted a copy on Scifi-Meshes years ago. Long gone now, though.

Issue 38 had a full back-cover ad for the BBtS.

The Nell is one of my favorite ships! I even build a lego moc up of it once, but didn't take any pictures. I plan to next time, though.

    Please do.
I have to wonder though. Would not Lego make for very lumpy curves?

So do pixels, but at a high enough resolution...

So, all he needs to do is build her big enough that from any reasonable distance, the lumps smooth out. Say... 1/4 scale? :D

Approximately 75 foot tall to get segmentation down to a decent level.
    I like smooth!

I'm not at all familiar with this ship, which is why I haven't commented previously. However, I have to say that you're doing a wonderful job at recreating a very organic and difficult looking shape. Are you using standard Lightwave tools for this, or is it done in Zbrush, or something like it?
  • mikalamikala176 Posts: 440Member
    Thanks for stopping in.
I'm using ZBrush and will retopo (in ZB) and send it off to Lightwave.
Why fight making all those crazy curves when you can sculpt it and have quite a clean mesh right out of ZBrush?

Well, for starters, I don't have ZBrush. ;) Though, I also don't see myself whipping one of these up anytime soon.

I see you've gotten on well with Lightwave so next mountain ...ZBrush!
  • evil_genius_180evil_genius_1804256 Posts: 11,034Member
ZBrush costs too much for me to buy it anytime soon. Though, I may give Sculptris another look one of these days.
  • mikalamikala176 Posts: 440Member
Sculptris is a great way to get into the whole 3d sculpting thing.
    I must warn you though.
    It is addictive.

It wasn't addictive for me the first time I tried it. But, that was a few years ago, before Pixologic bought it.

True, but the when I first built her, I got the shape right overall. I had to download photos of a custom model build of the Nell to see how it was laid out. I had to rebuild to the wings to make them look wider and more stream-like.

Thanks for making me do a spit-take while scrolling down this thread. I lost it when I saw the bra. LOL

Seriously, It's been a long time since I've seen this movie. It's about time someone attempted to model this ship. I hope to see more. :D

Someone NEEDS to sneak this ship into a clip of the BSG ragtag fleet...

BTW, In the hard SF novel "The diamond age" the main character was a girl named Nell and I think the author used the name of this ship for hers.
