Well, WhoCrashed told me this:
On Sun 9/8/2013 1:49:07 PM GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:WindowsMinidump090813-16625-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: hal.dll (hal+0x12903)
Bugcheck code: 0x124 (0x0, 0xFFFFFA80045A7028, 0xB2000040, 0x800),Error: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR
file path: C:Windowssystem32hal.dll
product: MicrosoftAR WindowsAR Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: Hardware Abstraction Layer DLL
Bug check description: This bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred. This bug check uses the error data that is provided by the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA).
This is likely to be caused by a hardware problem problem. This problem might be caused by a thermal issue.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system that cannot be identified at this time.

It'd one this 3-4 other times, but it's very sparse, the last time it did this was back in mid-August and WhoCrashed said another file (ntoskrnl.exe) was the cause...

I'm at a loss for the cause... because I can run the computer hard, rendering, gaming, etc. and it's fine, then when I'm doing something very simple, BLAM!

Now that I think about it, it's always been when I'm in Chrome... if I recall each instance properly... because, I can go play a high detailed game and nothing, I can render 3ds max scenes all day and it's fine...

If it always happens in the same application while doing the same thing then it sounds like it could be a software corruption issue or Windows registry glitch. But it could also be a bad sector on the HDD, faulty memory stick, loose memory stick or other hardware seating issue... it could be any one of a thousand things.

Yea, it just happened again... but it's not occurred in the same software... it's just random... same file again... but I don't know what's causing the problem, as I don't know how to analyze dump files, etc.

I was doing nothing system intense, I've been rendering, etc. all day with no issues... then it did this when I was simply doing nothing...

i had a crash like this a week or so ago - i knew what it was though, a faulty wacom, took it apart and re-cabled it, fine - just a broken wire. funny how a USB peripheral can bring down a whole system.

might be an idea to ditch chrome, its for me a buggy POS, probably with a hotline straight to the NSA.;)

Well, I completely redid Windows to see if it was some software related issue...
